We had a positive initial meeting with @StephenMorganMP today to discuss the ongoing market difficulties facing the UK pig sector.

While there is still more work to do, there was a commitment to maintain ongoing dialogue during this very challenging time.

Last week @DefraGovUK 's Agri Supply Chain Adjudicator, Richard Thompson, gave evidence to @CommonsEFRA.

At a time when the market is in a very challenging place, it was positive to hear that the Fair Dealing Regs will be reviewed next year to ensure they remain fit for purpose

This followed a visit a few weeks before with @SarahDykeLD in her constituency.

We once again discussed planning but specifically in the context of helping enable the transition to higher welfare systems and deliver on the ambitions set out in the Animal Welfare Strategy.

Last week we were pleased to host @JoshNewburyMP and @DaveR_Lichfield out on farm with @PackingtonFR.

In addition to talking them through the unit, we had some really productive discussions about challenges in the sector, including planning, environment, staffing and trade.

The NPA team have had a packed 2 days in Brussels. Katie and Tom sat down with 6 farming unions, @COPACOGECA, @EUAgri, @UKMisBrussels, among others, to discuss all things SPS, trade, welfare and pigs.

With new ASF cases recently found in Spain, this remains a serious concern for our sector.

This week we were pleased to join @JoshNewburyMP and UK Food Security APPG members in Parliament to hear the latest from DPHA and @APHAgovuk on all things biosecurity.

Crucially we discussed what the future holds post an SPS agreement with the EU.

There has been quite the reaction to my questioning of Keir Starmer in Parliament on Monday - particularly his tone-deaf answers on farm inheritance tax.

These issues are not going away in 2026 - they matter too much to rural and farming communities. Watch this space.

After @10DowningStreet spoke to the @CommonsLiaison, many news outlets have highlighted the damaging impact of the family farm tax on working people, particularly elderly and vulnerable farmers.

There is still time for the government to take action to remove those most at risk from the eye of this storm.

It is simply erroneous to suggest there are any farms in the UK close to having 100,000s of pigs on them.

Even once you remove small holders @DefraGovUK data shows the average size of a UK pig farm is 938 pigs, or 154 sows for female breeding herds. 1/2

This is all part of efforts to introduce Richard to the pig industry following the introduction of the fair dealing regs. We look forward to supporting further visits over the year ahead.

Yesterday members of the APPG on UK Food Security visited Dover Port to meet with DPHA and Border Force.

The group were able to learn about the situation border officials face with illegal meat imports and the threat this poses to farmers with diseases like ASF and FMD.
