@kxnomad This is very insightful. I think it’s a double edged sword, indeed. All the more reason to sharpen and consistently practice swinging it. We often don’t put as much importance on the honing the skill of deep rest and gratitude as we do on work “achieving” and “fixing”.
AMBITION, PROBLEM SOLVING & PEACE
Even when life settles into a rhythm of peace and accomplishment, and when the external world aligns with what many would call “success”, something strange often stirs beneath the surface. An urge to “keep fixing” can easily suffocate those with an abundance of air.
To narrow in on a hypothetical scenario… let’s say you’re earning a handsome yearly income and you’re a resident where cost of living is low, you have enduring love and excellent companionship, emotionally rich and meaningful relationships, a clean diet, restful sleep, and freedom from the typical vices that many have.
The human mind, especially the analytical, introspective, or driven mind, does not always know what to do with stability or equilibrium.
So… it begins to search.
Some of us are, in many ways, pattern-seeking, problem-solving beings. This cognitive architecture, rooted in evolution…was honed for survival in uncertain environments. To anticipate danger, to resolve threats… to perpetually do.
But in modern life, when many survival needs are met, that ancient machinery doesn’t shut down. Instead, it turns inward. It scans the internal landscape for dissonance, imagined faults, or subtle misalignments. It invents dragons when none remain to be slain.
This is the quiet affliction of the “problem solver.” …. Peace can become unsettling.
Stability, though hard-earned, begins to feel like stagnation. And so the mind begins to deconstruct its own contentment in an effort to reengage with its primary function: to solve, to fix, to strive.
From a psychological standpoint, this is linked to the default mode network… a set of brain regions that activate during rest and introspection. It’s where rumination lives, where the ego often whispers insecurities, and where narratives about the self are authored and reauthored.
Without mindful awareness, this inner dialogue can spiral. The very faculties that once pulled us out of chaos now start conjuring new forms of it.
Philosophers from East to West have noticed this tendency.
The Stoics warned of the tyranny of unchecked desire, not just for things, but for control, for resolution.
Buddhist teachings emphasize that suffering often arises not from circumstances, but from our resistance to the impermanence and unpredictability of life.
Even Nietzsche, with his idea of the “will to power,” observed how the human spirit aches for struggle… not necessarily to win, but to engage.
And so we arrive at a paradox: the more mastery we achieve over the external world, the more we may become vulnerable to the turbulence of the internal one.
This is the double-edged sword.
The gift of intelligence, ambition, and discernment can become a curse if not balanced by presence, gratitude, and the ability to rest without guilt.
The mind that built the palace may still find ways to set fire to its halls.
