NEWS: Ireland has signed a statutory instrument allowing Level 2 autonomous vehicles on public roads. Transport Minister Sean Canney says the move allows vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems – where the driver remains fully responsible but can, in certain limited circumstances, remove their hands from the wheel – to be lawfully used in Ireland.
The change clears a legal path for Level 2 systems, but Tesla still needs regulatory/type approval to launch its FSD (Supervised) on customer cars. Either way, this is a positive step forward.
Minister Canney confirmed that "work will now continue to prepare for the next stages of automation, including Level 3 technologies, which are beginning to receive European type approval." https://t.co/W5Jru5HAlS

Recycling its way to energy independence!
Redwood Materials is leading the positive charge in battery recycling!
According to their Nov 6 postRedwood produced over 60,000 metric tons of critical minerals—cobalt, lithium, nickel, and copper—in Nevada last year.
Now, they're starting production in South Carolina, adding 20,000 MT more to America's supply.
Why it matters: With the world going electric, and reliance on renewable energy growing, Redwood are inching towards a closed loop system and a stable source of critical minerals.
Tech Impact Score: 6/10
- Innovation: 2/3 (Pioneering large-scale battery recycling processes)
- Feasibility: 2/3 (Proven operations in Nevada and now expanding successfully to South Carolina)
- Impact: 2/4 (Supports green tech growth, and enhances critical mineral supply)

Will Ireland Miss the Autonomous Driving Revolution?
The most advanced autonomous driving system ready for rollout is Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD), currently operating in Supervised mode in the US. Tesla plans to launch unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) in June 2025, demonstrating a bold commitment to advancing this groundbreaking technology.
Early testing in parts of Europe, including impressive demonstrations in Paris navigating the complex roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe, showcases its potential. Tesla’s FSD relies on a vision-based system, using cameras and neural networks to interpret surroundings, and has logged billions of miles in real-world data to refine its capabilities.
Globally, competitors are advancing. Waymo operates fully driverless taxis in parts of the US, while China’s Baidu has deployed autonomous vehicles in cities like Beijing. These systems benefit from supportive regulations and extensive urban testing environments.
Will Ireland allow autonomous driving technologies to flourish here? We risk becoming a bystander in the AV revolution and be left in the slow lane?
