Hi all, just sent out my weekend update (free as always). It takes on the question of whether Russia is winning the war, which some are now saying. In particular the update looks at the question of European and US public opinion and Ukraine. Hint, Russia is not winning.

@Rokewood From a Labour voting pal: I would never do anything to support this shower of a government. However I’m gobsmacked. I had to deal with these RAAC concrete issues when I was working. The HSE issued an alert about 5 years ago warning of potential catastrophic collapse.

@Alan_Allport My mum died this afternoon after a short hospitalisation (from Monday evening). End of an era. She and her sister were teenagers in Hamburg Blankenese, survivors without whom we would not be around, two big families! A poignant shared anniversary.

@Rokewood @Alan_Allport Mum’s first memory of the war was being sent with her sister to farming friends of the family, near Berlin. Her parents wanted them to avoid the trauma of city bombings. Their first night at the farm included a violent thunderstorm, it struck a barn which caught fire, traumatic!

@Rokewood @Alan_Allport It’s a rollercoaster ride with elderly parent(s), and since I spoke to mum in the evening, she subsequently took a turn and is in Ninewells Hospital! Awaiting diagnostics etc., I’m acutely aware of your experience being that next stage…

@Rokewood @Alan_Allport Mum never spoke to us about suchlike as children, but opened up more easily to grandchildren who persuaded her to recount childhood memories, schooling, the wartime, her move to Scotland, and I’ve been the family historian, pulling as much first hand information together as poss.
