I post a lot about cleaning & enhancing Autochromes, but I realise not everyone will know what they are...
Autochromes are an early colour photographic process patented in 1903 by the Lumière brothers in France and first marketed in 1907.
Microscopic grains of potato starch were dyed red, green and violet, then mixed evenly into a paste and coated onto sheets of glass. A black-and-white emulsion was then flowed over this layer. When the photo was taken, the grains of potato starch on each plate acted like millions of tiny coloured filters creating a mosaic of glowing coloured dots, giving Autochromes the look of pointillist paintings.
The process was fiddly, messy and very expensive. Six Autochrome plates cost the equivalent of the average weekly wage, so they remained out of reach for ordinary working people. Consequently only a few hundred thousand Autochromes exist today (to put that into perspective, it is now estimated that humanity captures 5.3 billion photos every single day!)
Autochromes were not designed to be printed onto paper, instead they were colour transparencies on glass which would be viewed like photographic slides held in a special mirrored viewer.
They are considered the first true colour pictures, and the only industrial colour photography process until the introduction of affordable colour film in 1935.
When I began tweeting Autochrome enhancements during Lockdown in 2020, I used a basic algorithm to average out the difference between adjacent pixels, which smoothed away the pointillism of the image and made it look more akin to a modern photograph. Whilst this certainly enraged traditionalists, it also generated a lot of interest from people who began to view history in a new light through the images, and I am very proud to have captured so many peoples' imaginations with the work ♥️
