ON THIS DATE IN 2005: This statement was issued by NWS meteorologist Robert Ricks (from the Slidell office) at mid-morning on August 28, 2005.

At the time, Katrina was a category five hurricane in the Gulf, similar in strength to Camille in 1969. It would make landfall the next day as a category three at Waveland Mississippi. 

Some thought this “doomsday” statement was a hoax. Unfortunately, it wasn’t... as everyone would find out the next day.

August 25, 2005: Exactly 21 years ago today, Hurricane Katrina made its initial landfall right here in South Florida as a compact Category 1 before its catastrophic journey into the Gulf.

Looking back at the radar scan from that morning brings back memories of those intense outer bands rolling across Miami-Dade and Broward. Wild to think the SE coast hasn't experienced a landfall since then. Counting our lucky stars down here. #hurricanekatrina

Tropical Update – Atlantic

A robust tropical wave is expected to exit the West African coast around August 24. This currently represents the strongest and most consistent multi-model development signal of the 2026 #hurricane season thus far.

Near-Term Development Potential

It is worth noting that the GFS (and its AI-version) initially develops the currently strongest-looking wave over Africa. However, that earlier system is shown to dissipate before becoming a tropical cyclone. The more persistent feature — and the one supported by the broader multi-model ensemble signal — is a trailing wave expected to emerge off the African coastline around August 24.

Multiple independent modeling systems are in good agreement on this later wave generating a closed low shortly after moving into the eastern Atlantic.

The deterministic guidance (GFS, EC-AIFS, GEM, and ICON) all show a well-defined surface low by August 26. Ensemble models (ECENS, ECAIE, FNV3, GENC) also display a dense cluster of members developing the system within my own preferred verification window (deterministic ≤ 192 hours, ensembles ≤ 288 hours).

Based solely on the current multi-model guidance, the probability of this system ultimately reaching tropical storm status is estimated at approximately 55%.

Track Evolution

Although it remains fairly early for such discussion, I’ll simply mention that the guidance currently favors a track that begins more westward as the system passes the Cape Verde Islands, followed by a gradual rightward bend (west-northwest to northwest, and eventually more northward). This solution would keep the majority of ensemble members well north of the Lesser Antilles.

This type of track is fairly typical during strong El Niño seasons. The combination of stronger upper-level westerlies and a generally weaker subtropical ridge tends to encourage systems to gain latitude sooner. As a result, deep tropical tracks that threaten the Caribbean islands or the U.S. mainland become much less common, albeit not impossible.

That said, it is still way too early to be discussing such specifics, as the synoptic environment can change on much smaller time scales (even in a matter of a few days).

Longer-Term Intensity Potential

While the large-scale environment remains challenging in the deep tropics (persistent shear and dry air associated with the strong El Niño), conditions become more favorable once the system reaches the subtropics. Any realistic opportunity for higher intensity, including the potential for hurricane strength, is most likely to occur once the system is north of 20°N and west of 50°W. In that region, vertical wind shear is typically lower and the anomalously warm western subtropical Atlantic waters can provide a better thermodynamic environment for intensification.

Right now, this is simply something to monitor as the potential signal moves farther up in time. The main takeaway is that we are rapidly nearing the August 20–September 15 climatological peak, and the guidance is beginning to pick up on heightened developmental prospects.
