Had a harrowing weekend when one of the kids developed a severe allergic reaction, and had to be hospitalized for two days.

Some thoughts on the Ontario health system after this close and sudden brush with one of the worst nightmares as a parent:

- It is a really good health system! There are so many bright spots to be proud of. We have amazing, dedicated, loving and caring providers. There were so many patients to treat, and you could tell everyone was run off their feet, but they still kept trying to do their best. So many small acts of kindness, from the security guard giving out stickers, to the nice nurse who let us get a few hours of sleep on a slightly nicer chair in the waiting room, to the volunteers with boxes of Hot Wheels toys (which is the currency in which my household runs lol).

- It is a f***ing overloaded, overstressed and underfunded system. The hospital had an AI powered triage system (very advanced stuff developed in-house at UofT) but the tech can't make up for extra space and staff. The wait indicator just kept increasing as the number of patients increased throughout the night, up to 10 hours at one point. The waiting room expands to hundreds of chairs in the main lobby and cafeteria, just packed to the brim with kids and their parents. All of these problems are solvable with resources and appropriate funding, but it seems that this is not happening. In the headlong rush to deliver huge financial gains to private-sector profiteers, we are going to lose the good parts of this system.

- Improved ventilation/universal masking is a big win Every staff member, volunteer, parent, visitor and kids who were old enough were wearing masks. CO2 levels almost never rose above 600 throughout the building. And for good reason, eventually we were moved to a room with 3 very young babies, who are very vulnerable to respiratory diseases of all types. Cancer patients, transplant patients, older relatives, everyone, are all protected by these proactive measures. I'm going to be checking for symptoms regularly, but I am hopeful we did not pickup any nasty bug there. It was a huge burden lifted from our shoulders to see at least this risk minimized.

I've seen the stresses on the system from the MD side of the stretcher, but seeing it viscerally first hand, especially in a potentially life-threatening circumstance is something else.

We really need to hold our elected representatives responsible for the critical bottlenecks in our acute-care hospital system. It's all we've got, and you never know when it's going to be you sitting in a hard plastic chair for 10 hours hanging on to your shivering, lethargic sick child.

Kiddo is back home, thank goodness, and in good health and spirits thanks to the excellent care he received. I hope that will continue to be the case for every other family caught in the same circumstances.

Donald Trump got 5 military deferments during the Vietnam war. He demeaned John McCain for being a POW, attacked a Gold Star family, insulted a military widow, he tried to defund the VA, stole & then shared with regular civilians, top secret military documents, he told his Chief of Staff that he didn’t want wounded veterans at a military parade because “no one wanted to see them”, before telling that same man, John Kelly (the father of a fallen soldier) that he “didn’t get it”, that he didn’t understand “what was in for them”, he called the 1,800 Marines killed during the bloody Battle of Belleau Wood “suckers” for dying in action, didn’t want to visit the graves of American soldiers buried outside Paris because they were ‘losers’, he has repeatedly belittled, insulted, name called and attacked just about every single member of the military who served during his time in office, or any other military leader who so much as even dared to criticize him, and as recently as this year, he called for the execution of our Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for “treason.”
But sure, he’ll never forget the sacrifices our Vets have made, because he “appreciates” them.
