Official account of Hiraiwa Lab. We are seeking for the mechanisms behind dynamic emergent phenomena in living systems from theoretical biophysicist views.
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Rakesh Chatterjee to our lab from today! He will be working on the project related with phase separation kinetics far-from-equilibrium.
Welcome, Rakesh! 🥳
Our recent paper has been published in ACS Nano!
The collective force scales linearly with the number of kinesin molecular motors driving a swarm of microtubules. Thousands of kinesin can work together cooperatively!

Congratulations Rubaya!
Spatial control of adhesion proteins is crucial for cell collectives. Tricellular junctions (TCJs) represent the example. We found gel-like condensation of a TCJ protein stabilizes its accumulation even in tissue dynamics, ensuring molecular recruitment and epithelial remodeling.
Dr Tzer Han Tan @tzerhan29 from UCSD visited us @palmiopas@AcadSinica in late-March! We, with a colleague here, hosted his seminar and discussions with PIs. We learnt a lot from his talk on their beautiful works on odd active matter. Thank you Tzer Han for such a wonderful day!
Last week, we invited Prof. Emeritus Masaki Sano (UTokyo), ex-boss of Tetsuya @HiraiwaTetsuya, and organized official colloquium and interaction sessions at IOP-AS @palmiopas :

We all learned a lot. Thank you very much, Sano-sensei, for the wonderful time!
Keng-hui Lin organized the int'l symposium "4th PBBP Symposium- The Biological Physics Across Scales From Single Molecules to Organisms" in Chiayi city, Taiwan

and it was successfully concluded!
Congratulations on the great success, @KenghuiLin1 🥳🎉
Ryota Sakamoto invited Dr. Kevin Chen from Yale U to our institute @palmiopas early this month. We learnt a lot from his seminar at IoP on their multi-approach studies on behavioral dynamics and information flow! We also enjoyed the discussions with him. Thank you, Kevin!
Prof Makoto Sato from Kanazawa U visited us @tpbghl@palmiopas last week and had very interesting seminar on cellular tiling mechanism! Visitors for another workshop here, Profs Okuda @MechgenLab (NanoLSI) Hatakeyama (Science Tokyo) Hayakawa (KIT), also joined using this chance.
Our joint workshop MALA2025 at Keio U has successfully concluded! I appreciate all speakers from Taiwan and Japan, and Suzuki-san, who worked very hard as the organizer local-side, and all participants for stimulating and lively discussions and building new friendship networks🎉
We had a seminar by @SShimobayashi today! He gave a wonderful talk covering various topics in biophysics and experimental/imaging technologies on biomolecular condensates. We learned a lot and enjoyed his inspiring presentation and exciting discussions. Thank you again, Shunsuke!
We, with @KeitaKamino@NasuLab_IBC Dr Sakamoto, are inviting Prof Shunsuke Shimobayashi (@SShimobayashi) from CiRA, Kyoto U, to here @palmiopas@AcadSinica. Tomorrow, he will give a seminar at IoP on their great experiments on intracellular condensates! Thank you, Shunsuke!!!
We, with Prof Ryo Suzuki (Keio U), are excited to announce the upcoming international workshop “Multidisciplinary Approach to Living and Active Matter Systems”📢
