Every $100 increase in an area’s median rent is associated with a 9% increase in the rate of homelessness, according to a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
@bidetmarxman Correct. However, PIT data is only half of the AHAR report to Congress. HUD uses the Longitudinal Systems Analysis which covers an entire fiscal year. So while the PIT is the only way to understand unsheltered homelessness, the LSA does give a larger picture.
@bidetmarxman That's not entirely true. The PIT count includes both sheltered and unsheltered counts. So the unsheltered part is the canvassing while the shelter count includes data from shelters and transitional housing.
We can't ticket, jail, and sweep our way out of this housing crisis. The price of rent is skyrocketting, while the number of people who can afford the rent is plummeting.
Those people need housing, not handcuffs.

The housing market: $2000 for a roach infested studio. Have to make 3x the rent to get in. 1st and last deposit. 10%+ increases in rent every year. Eviction record blacklists you for life. No pets.
Gov.: There are only homeless people because of mental illness and drugs. 🥺
"[Homelessness] is not going away; in fact, research shows that it will continue to grow at record rates," writes Elise McCauley.

Imagine being told you have to go somewhere or go to jail. You don't get told where (it's usually very far), you don't get to see what the place is like, and you can't take any of your stuff. Also, there's no housing, so in 3 months, when your stay is up, you'll be kicked out.
