Hello Everyone, I live in Jackson WY. After a six year absence, the County Fair wants to bring back pig wrestling. My wife is a vet and she wrote a letter to the County Commissioners who will vote on 11/17. I have attached her letter below. Also there is a poll in the local paper taking public opinion. If after reading her letter you agree that this event is inhumane and animal cruelty, please vote in the poll which also below. Thank you for your time, every vote counts! Pig Wrestling: I am asking the board to reconsider their vote on re-instating pig wrestling at the county fairgrounds for several reasons; including that it is a poor example to our children to call the mistreatment of animals entertainment, it is potentially setting up the county and the fair board for legal challenges under Wyomings anti-cruelty statutes and it is unnecessary and cruel to the animals involved. First and foremost, children are exposed to violence daily in this country via their phones, TVs and internet and to add to that by having them either participate in or just be spectators to sanctioned animal cruelty seems counterproductive. As a society we should be striving to give our children positive experiences about the care and treatment of animals and to move away from the idea that it is okay to abuse them for our enjoyment. To be clear, nothing good happens to a pig during pig wrestling. Even pig producers admit that animals get injured and a number of them ( an unknown number because no one keeps stats on the things that they don’t want to know) are sent to slaughter after the events. Legs are broken, backs are broken. Years ago one of the pigs at the Teton County fair was paralyzed during the final event. If a pig is lucky, he is only bruised and traumatized, if unlucky he dies after the event. After 25 years of being a vet, I have witnessed the inhumane treatment of animals not only in our country but also in others. Fortunately, there is an increasing awareness of what is right and what is wrong with regard to how animals are treated, and behaviors and laws are changing to support a more compassionate stance. Many fairs have already banned pig wrestling across the country because they are bad for publicity. Gladiator events used to be tradition in Rome until the world became more enlightened and the contests were banned. Wyoming has already had two very public cases of animal abuse that have gone nationwide- Forest Stearns killing his horse after tying him to the ground and Cody Roberts tormenting and ultimately killing a wolf last year. Wyoming does not need any more cases of animal abuse - especially abuse sanctioned by a local town and fair board. Wyoming statute has made abuse to pigs illegal (section 2 and 4)so If a pig does get injured or killed during this event, the town and fair board could be open to lawsuits. The fair has not had the event in 6 years and there has been no economic hardship. Many positive events could replace pig wrestling such as dog agility competitions, 4 H costume contests, Barn dance, Monster truck rallies or the Ninja warrior course that was done for a few years. In Wisconsin, a local Parish replaced pig wrestling with a human foosball competition that was a huge success. It is well known that pigs have the intellect equivalent to a 3 year old child and are smarter than most dogs. If unsocialized puppies and adult dogs were used in the same manner as pigs in these competitions, people would be outraged. Pigs already die daily to feed our country and live in horrific conditions in the meantime - it would be nice if we could have enough respect for them to not perpetuate their suffering as well as the perception that the lives of livestock have no value at all.
