A group of 826 individuals from Matara arrived in Badulla yesterday (01), to help rebuild the affected areas in the Badulla District due to Cyclone Ditwah. The group, consisting of volunteer groups, social activists, and media teams, had arrived with essential machinery and tools for reconstruction.

"Ragging Killed Her: The Forgotten Story of Rupa Rathnaseeli"

In 1975, she entered the University of Peradeniya with pride, becoming the first from her poor village in Maha-Edanda to make it that far. But within a week, her life was destroyed—not by failure, but by ragging.

She was ordered to strip her gown by seniors in Ramanathan Hall. She refused. That night, fearing what would come next, she jumped out of her second-floor window to escape.

Rupa became paralyzed for life. Her dreams died on the concrete outside that dorm.

For 22 years, she lived in a wheelchair—isolated, forgotten, abandoned by the same system that had promised her opportunity. She wrote to President Jayewardene in 1985. She begged for help.
A one-time grant was given. Promises of a home, support, and a monthly allowance followed. None were fulfilled.

She tried to sew from home to survive. She failed. Her body was broken. Her spirit was shattered.

In 1997, Rupa rolled her wheelchair to the garden well behind her house. And then, she rolled herself in.

That’s how her story ended.

No arrests. No justice. No public reckoning.

Rupa’s death was the first documented suicide in SriLanka directly caused by university ragging. And it should have ended the culture of abuse. It didn’t.

To this day, students are still being harassed, beaten, violated—all in the name of “tradition.”

Rupa didn’t die because she was weak.
She died because we let her down.
Her story must not be buried with her. Say her name.

Let it echo through every classroom, every dorm, every hallway where abuse hides behind silence.

Ragging is not culture. It is cruelty. And it kills.
