Under the motto #goglobal, we organised an #online course, spanning almost a month, for students from @ZJU_China (senior #undergraduate and #graduate students) focusing on “Durability of reinforced concrete”. Thanks to Zhidong Zhang and Prof Qiang Zeng for organising this course.
Happy faces from our group at NDT-CE 2022, organised by the Swiss Association for Technical Inspections in Zurich, CH. Great contributions/discussions in the areas of #sensing, #inspection, and #nondestructive evaluation of #corrosion in infrastructure.

We highlight the importance of considering the #dynamic and coupled corrosion and moisture #transport behaviour during the periods which active corrosion can occur in carbonated concrete exposed to cyclic wetting/drying conditions.

It is well known that #moisture distribution in #carbonated#concrete plays a key role in steel #corrosion. In this study, water uptake in carbonated mortar was monitored over time by #neutron imaging, coupled with real time measurements of steel #potential.
Safe disposal #radwaste for ~1m yr, requires a thorough understanding of how the steel canister interacts with the local environment. Zhidong Zhang presented our perspective on "The fate of iron in a nuclear waste repository" at the #LTC2022 in Baden, CH. @Nagra_Schweiz
Wohooo! 🎉 Our PhD student, Patrick Pfändler was awarded the René Hornung Prize 2022 by the Swiss society for nondestructive testing for #innovation in the field of #nondestructivetesting. The #award is granted for exceptional work by young #researchers in the field of #ndt.
The abstract submission deadline for the 6th International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting - ICCRRR 2022, October 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa - has been extended to 31 May. To submit your contribution: https://t.co/Zwd5IDbnXR.
What happens to steel under cathodic protection? Our #phd student Federico Martinelli-Orlando presenting his work on in-situ #spectroscopy characterising carbon steel under #cathodicprotection at #Ceocor2022 - International virtual congress and exhibition.

Can the inspection of cantilever retaining walls be simplified? Last week Lukas Bircher and Patrick Pfändler had the opportunity to test their newly developed #inspection method for retaining walls in a first #field trial. Loads of experience, first results look promising.
To this aim, we combine data from #conditionassessment, #labtesting and numerical #modelling. The case studies show that this refined approach can yield results surprisingly different from traditional assessments.
Excited that our report for the @VegvesenSor The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is published. In this study, we determine the optimum timing and the most economic solution for repair of three #concrete#bridges. @ETH_en

@Durability_ETH@RILEM1947@StatensVegvesen Special thanks go to all TC members who contributed to the publications for their commitment and hard work. We are also very grateful that RILEM provided the platform and enabled this TC.
#RILEM1947
@Durability_ETH@RILEM1947 We had 17 meetings, most of them in Europe, a few in North America, and some online meetings. I remember all these meetings as gatherings in a great atmosphere that facilitated many inspiring scientific discussions. Below a picture of our first meeting in Oslo @StatensVegvesen
