Today marks the centenary of the birth of Norma Jeane Mortenson, the woman the world knew as Marilyn Monroe.

While the bourgeois press continues to gape at the ghost of a manufactured icon, the Communist Party of Britain reclaims the intellectual and the comrade.

Her politics were born of the assembly line. From the foster homes of Los Angeles to the Radioplane munitions factory, Monroe’s class consciousness was forged in the heat of proletarian survival. She was a woman of fierce intelligence, possessing an IQ that dwarfed the men who sought to manage her, yet she was reduced to a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded by the parasitic studio system.

The FBI files, which tracked her until her final breath, confirm what the establishment feared - a sex symbol who had read Marx and admired the Chinese Revolution. She was a militant anti-racist who used her platform to shatter the colour bar for Ella Fitzgerald, and she stood firm against the cowardice of the McCarthyite witch hunts when she married the blacklisted playwright Arthur Miller.

We must recognise that Monroe’s struggle was the intersection of class exploitation and patriarchal violence. She was a worker whose labour was her own body, super-exploited by a system that demanded she be beautiful and silent. Her life was a constant act of rebellion against the male gaze of capital. On her 100th birthday, we do not celebrate a "bombshell". We honour a clear-minded socialist who understood that the liberation of her class was inseparable from the liberation of her sex.

Happy Centenary, Comrade Marilyn. The struggle continues.

Wow, this is rare (in fact it might be a first): South Korea's president personally debunks anti-China fake news in local media, calling it a "deliberately fabricated fake news article intended to be used as material for anti-China agitation."

He asks: "how on earth does stirring up Sinophobia help the country and its people?"

This is true leadership.

I've made this case more times than I care to remember with regards to France, my country, where fake news on China are pretty much a daily occurrence.

I've never understood why the government lets it happen without ever pushing back: why would you knowingly let your own population be whipped into hatred based on fabrications and distortions, all the more when it goes against your national interests?

Heck it's even worse than this in France and many other Western countries: there are several instances of media fabrications actually dictating government policy in a way that harmed the national interest.

The clearest example is years of unchallenged media hysteria over an alleged "Uyghur genocide" that created such political pressure that the French National Assembly voted to recognize it near-unanimously (169 to 1) - without a shred of a serious and independent French investigation.

This in turn helped kill the EU-China investment agreement (CAI) back in 2021, which had been negotiated over seven years and would have given European companies unprecedented access to the Chinese market.

In other words, the very agreement designed to fix the trade imbalance that Europe now endlessly complains about was killed by its own media-manufactured hysteria.

And now those same politicians blame China for a lopsided trade relationship that they let their own media's fabrications destroy.

That's NOT leadership.

Today, as a Ukrainian-Jewish and a scholar of the Holocaust, I feel deeply ashamed.

I never could have imagined that in my country — the country where the Nazis murdered 1.5 million Jews, the country of Babyn Yar, the very symbol of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, a country that claims to be fighting for “freedom and democracy” — a Nazi collaborator and OUN leader like Andriy Melnyk would be buried with full state honors.

Men under Melnyk’s leadership served in the Auxiliary police under Nazi. They hunted Jews hiding in attics, basements, forests, and barns, desperate to survive the Holocaust. They guarded ghettos and camps. They marched Jews to execution sites. And they took part in the shootings alongside the Germans.

By the spring of 1943, the Holocaust in Ukraine was nearly complete. The Jewish neighbors were gone — murdered before the eyes, and often with the assistance, of Melnyk’s followers. And it was precisely then that Melnyk supported the creation of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, whose members swore an oath to Adolf Hitler.

And today, the president of my country — a man whose own relatives were murdered by the Nazis — kneels before the coffin of this Nazi collaborator.

One could hardly imagine a greater humiliation for Jews. It is a humiliation for everyone who once believed that “Never Again” meant something in contemporary Ukraine — a country where militant ethnic nationalism increasingly dictates the politics of memory, and national identity.

A transnational Jewish-Italian mob network centered on Meyer Lansky and Santo Trafficante ran Cuba as a privatized extraction arm of US empire: gambling, laundering, narcotics, prostitution, political bribery.

What the US could not openly run on its own border, the syndicate ran for it in Havana.

Batista was on a $ 1.28-million-a-month retainer, delivered every Monday at noon. His development bank bankrolled half of every new mob casino.

And this was not just gambling. Havana was a key node in the postwar heroin pipeline: Turkish opium, Marseille labs, Havana transshipment, New York distribution.

By the late 1960s, that French Connection network supplied most of America’s heroin.

Then Castro won.

In January 1959 the casinos were smashed, the bosses fled or were detained, and Batista escaped with a fortune estimated around $300 million.

The national lottery, once a graft channel, was converted into a housing fund.

But the mob did not disappear. It was redeployed.

Lansky’s lieutenant Doc Stacher later said Lansky offered to finance Castro’s assassination as early as 1959. By September 1960, the CIA was running the operation directly.

The Agency hired Johnny Rosselli, Sam Giancana, and Santo Trafficante. The opening offer was $150,000. The weapon: poison pills from the CIA’s Technical Services Division.

The 1975 Church Committee found concrete evidence of at least eight CIA plots against Castro between 1960 and 1965.

The same Havana-Miami underworld that lost Cuba in 1959 became useful again as the deniable violence arm of US policy.

Of the three mob figures the CIA hired, Giancana was murdered before he could testify to Congress. Rosselli was murdered after he did. Trafficante survived.

The continuity is structural, not anecdotal: Tampa, Havana, Miami. Casinos became exile paramilitaries. Exile paramilitaries became lobby infrastructure.

Jorge Mas Canosa, a Bay of Pigs veteran and CIA-radio figure, founded the Cuban American National Foundation in 1981 at the suggestion of Reagan's advisors. It was modeled on AIPAC and built to harden Cuba policy permanently.

The lobby's most famous operative was Luis Posada Carriles: CIA-trained, Bay of Pigs veteran, Iran-Contra contractor under Oliver North, perpetrator of the 1976 mid-air bombing of Cubana Flight 455 (73 dead) and the 1997 Havana hotel bombings. By 1998, he had publicly named Mas Canosa as his financier. He died free in Miami in 2018.

They did not just lobby. They wrote the laws.

1992: Cuban Democracy Act.
1996: Helms-Burton.
2019: Trump activates Title III, letting US claimants sue foreign firms using confiscated Cuban property.

Today the legal afterlife of Batista’s Cuba runs through federal court: hotel chains, expropriation claims, embargo law, and Miami political power.

Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State, is a product of that machine.

When he says “freedom in Cuba,” hear the history underneath it:

As someone living under a US-backed dictatorship, I can tell you this is how it begins. 2 years and 21 State of Exceptions later, we’re ruled by perpetual martial law with Pentagon bombs, sexual torture, military checkpoints, activists starved, waterboarded or disappeared by soldiers. A little DEA operation turns into the opening of an entire FBI Office in our capital, the military killing protesters at a general strike turned into targeted assassination plots on indigenous labor activists, a few visits from a U.S. Envoy turns into U.S. boots-on-the-ground operations where campesinos are electrocuted. Ecuador has lived all of this already: the hijacking of a once socialist nation literally beat into a Yankee colony. We cannot let it happen to our sister nation of Bolivia too.
