@ericweinstein Eric, apart from being incomprehensible it is also utter bollocks. Thiel is a bizarre character full of personal contradictions and seemingly divorced from a reality in which understanding what’s good is the core of what makes us human.
@GaryMarcus Correct. And this is about a vector they can’t control - Chinese model development which is sitting in their slipstream the fact of which will either yield some kind of control of open source or accelerated development in any event.
@timschuster@hilbertspaess Why is this a binary we win they lose? Perhaps everyone loses or everyone gains. The underlying principles to build a model are available to all. China funds its activities the market funds the US participants. Neither are angels.
@chamath Americans are very odd. Everything is war to you guys. You have to have an adversary. You infected the world with that outlook and held back humanity’s progress to boost your national interest in the process. Trump has made this clear. At some point you will grow up. Or not.
@chamath The US has never shied away from monopoly lock in or let’s be fair oligopoly lock in. What is this skepticism really about though - AI is coming for your portfolio. You are concerned that AI companies will eat platforms as part of their built in functionality.
@Nigel_Farage And that is worse than taking $5m to fund your lifestyle and not declaring it? Why on earth would Labour call a general election? Majority of MPs voted for leadership change and Labour are sticking to manifesto.
@chamath You still need to spend 10’s of 000’s of dollars on the compute and admin infrastructure to run these models with little to no access to the labs to provide feedback, I assume. So cheaper in principle but more administratively complex to operate.
@BillAckman Neither is it preventing access to its models many of which remain open source. All while the US Govt can’t get its head around the economics of controlling AI for itself and allowing development to occur to compete with China.
@jonyeo88@chamath Also did it ever occur to anyone that the bottleneck in development was poor implementation due to poor communication. Now dev and client have a common language by which they can communicate i.e. via an LLM. That is your productivity gain right there.
@jonyeo88@chamath From the get go token maxing was BS. If it sounds too good to be true then it is probably false and the idea that simply generating tokens most of which are hidden in “reasoning” is old increase productivity is nonsense.
