As we mark World Breastfeeding Week, I would like to address the heart of our nation. Our mothers.

Every feed, every late night, and every moment of dedication is an act of love. Breastfeeding is far more than nutrition. It is your baby’s very first shield, building strong immunity, emotional warmth, and a foundation for lifelong health.

Over the past two years, the Maldives has made key progress in extending paid nursing breaks for working mothers up to 2 years, protecting paid maternity leave, and expanding infant healthcare across the country.

It is vital that mothers fully utilise these entitlements, from maternity leave to the paid nursing break, to provide nursing and breastfeeding for the healthiest start in life. It is therefore a shared duty of all, families, workplaces, and communities alike to support mothers.

This week, let us reaffirm our commitment to this year’s theme: “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
