Every airplane you see in the sky started as an idea.
Same with bridges.
Diesel engines.
Rockets.
Factories.
At one point, none of it existed.
It was just somebody sitting there thinking,
“I wonder if we could build this.”
Then came the sketches.
The math.
The failed parts.
The late nights.
The people arguing over what would work and what would absolutely not work.
And somehow, after enough trial and error, the idea became real.
That is probably my favorite thing about engineering.
We can take something that only exists in somebody’s head…
And turn it into something that flies, hauls, powers, builds, or changes the world.
Soooo.
Fact of the night:
The steel used to build the Golden Gate Bridge expands and contracts with temperature.
On a hot day, the bridge can grow more than 16 inches (about 41 cm) in length. Engineers designed for that movement from the very beginning, allowing the bridge to flex safely through changing temperatures and strong winds.
Great engineering isn’t about making something immovable it’s about designing it to move in exactly the right way.

@WorldAndScience I wish I could comprehend what I’m looking at. I understand it, but I just cannot comprehend the vastness. We see so many stars, but there is actually more empty space than occupied space.

@DimaZeniuk I completely agree! I hear too often why something isn’t being done, and it’s always money. If we weren’t so bottlenecked by money which we invented and made impossibly worthless and hard to obtain we’d control how we progress.
NASA just used an entire planet to steer a spacecraft.
On May 15, Psyche flew about 2,860 miles over Mars.
It wasn’t stopping. Wasn’t even slowing down for a visit.
Mars’ gravity bent its path and gave it the exact course change it needed to keep heading toward a metal asteroid hundreds of millions of miles away.
No giant burn required for the big move.
Just orbital mechanics, ridiculous precision, and a room full of engineers basically going:
“Yeah… we’ll use Mars.”
Spaceflight will never stop being cool. 🇺🇸

Not a press release about “innovation.” Actual steel, docks, and skilled hands on the Gulf Coast. While the rest of the world talks about capacity, we’re pouring concrete.
The men who weld, fit, and run these yards still matter.
It’s hard to comprehend how small Earth really is.
The Sun is about 109 Earths wide.
Yet we built machines that can study its surface, watch plasma follow magnetic fields, and detect activity on a star 93 million miles away.
Sometimes the coolest part of engineering isn’t the machine.
It’s what the machine lets us see.
