The Church didn’t execute Tyndale. It merely tried him for heresy, declared him a heretic, degraded him from the priesthood, and handed him to the secular authorities who killed heretics pursuant to the Catholic emperor’s anti-heresy law. Glad we cleared up the myth.😏
@algell123@trevorturner10@LilaGraceRose It’s a miscarriage of justice. The possibility of it being misapplied doesn’t mean capital punishment shouldn’t exist. For instance, innocent people get thrown in prison. Should we abolish prisons because of that possibility? Obviously not.
@PawleSardano@michaeljknowles Ironically, you quote a passage that isn’t even canonical to prove your point. John 7:53-8:11 isn’t original to John. It was composed after him, and the oldest manuscripts don’t contain the story. In fact, it’s attached to Luke sometimes or in other random places in John.
@PawleSardano@michaeljknowles How long has the RCC been against the death penalty? Oh, right: 8 years. That Catechism section was created in 2018. But we apparently know better than God who instituted the death penalty to effectuate justice.
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Matthew 10:34–39, ESV)
Because they are not regenerated by the Holy Spirit. The “T” in TULIP (total depravity) means that all men will resist the Spirit without the regeneration given to the elect.
Reformed theology makes a distinction between the general call and the effectual call of the Gospel. All receive the general call (which is what the Scribes & Pharisees reject and thereby resist the Holy Spirit). The elect receive the effectual call (like Paul’s conversion on the Road to Damascus).
@DineshDSouza Could we not twist Arminianism in the same way? “God chose me because he saw how I would choose him.” Certainly gives more reason to boast since it’s more man-centered of a view.
@redeemed_zoomer There’s a difference between disorders that actually make you psychotic (like schizophrenia) and often medicalized terms for disorders of the soul. Sin is a sickness but not a medical sickness.
Ultimately, Lindsey Clancy murdered her children methodically because she wanted to.
The Lindsey Clancy thing makes clear what I’ve been saying for years
“Mental illness” does NOT justify sin. In fact most of “mental health” culture is just self obsession and diagnosing sin as an “illness” rather than voluntary evil
@ZacharyGarris It's more than just a situational thing too. Machen's the leader of a whole movement. It was clearly a de facto rejection of biblical orthodoxy by the GA. I highly doubt a modernist would be railroaded in such a way at his trial. The presbytery and GA had it out for Machen.
@mc203t@OrthodoxOrigen This is an insane take. The ex cathedra statements are sins against the laity. It is immoral to bind upon the conscience of the people something that is outside of Scripture, especially something wholly speculative.
You’re misrepresenting Calvin. He clearly makes a distinction between essentials and nonessentials of the faith. He’s disputing an Anabaptist tendency to immediately separate over very minor disagreements. Major heresies remove the mark of the true church. Here’s a quote:
Nay, even in the administration of word and sacraments defects may creep in which ought not to alienate us from its communion. For all the heads of true doctrine are not in the same position. Some are so necessary to be known, that all must hold them to be fixed and undoubted as the proper essentials of religion: for instance, that God is one, that Christ is God, and the Son of God, that our salvation depends on the mercy of God, and the like. Others, again, which are the subject of controversy among the churches, do not destroy the unity of the faith.
Calvin, John. 1997. Institutes of the Christian Religion. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.
After watching the @redeemed_zoomer and @ehenes debate (good debate btw for both sides), my further research convinces me that the Machen trial was a complete sham. The judiciary tribunal is guilty of a bigger sin for that complete miscarriage of justice than anything anyone could pin on Machen.
@redeemed_zoomer@ehenes This does not happen “all the time”. The fact that this seems normal to you is precisely the OPC’s point.
By this standard couldn’t the PCUSA defrock the confessional teaching elders, but we can’t separate because they are still technically members?
