🇺🇦📷 New guidelines for World Heritage in #Ukraine handed over by UNESCO on 25 June in Gdańsk (#URC2026).
Developed with @ICOMOS & @ICCROM, and supported by @JapanGov, they provide practical tools for risk preparedness, emergency response & recovery.
At #URC2026 in Gdańsk, @UNESCO joined the signing of a Joint Declaration on mainstreaming culture into Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
Together with Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture @MinCultUkraine, Ministry for Communities and Territories Development @MinForUADev, and Ministry of Economy @mineconomdev, UNESCO is working to ensure that culture is integrated across recovery policies, strategies and frameworks.
🇺🇦 Recovery will not be complete without culture.
UNESCO welcomes the continuation of 🇪🇺 European Union support to safeguard Ukraine’s documentary heritage.
The new €2 million initiative will strengthen emergency preparedness, expand digitization and digital preservation, and improve access to documentary heritage across 🇺🇦 Ukraine, including the heritage of national minorities.

In the context of the escalation of the war in Ukraine following the invasion by the Russian Federation, @UNESCO condemns the reported strike on 15 June that hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, within the World Heritage property “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”, one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks.
The strike reportedly caused significant damage to the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral. Adjacent historic structures, including elements of the Lavra’s fortification complex and Ivan Kushnik Tower, were also reportedly impacted.
#UNESCO condemns attacks against cultural property, educational institutions, students, education personnel and media professionals protected under international law. Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education, and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion.
UNESCO stands ready to support relevant authorities in assessing damage to cultural and educational institutions and identifying urgent measures within its mandate.

Deeply honoured to be received by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, and grateful for his warm welcome.
I thanked His Holiness @Pontifex for his strong voice in support of peace, human dignity, dialogue and multilateralism.
His encyclical Magnifica Humanitas on “safeguarding the human person in the time of AI” resonates profoundly with @UNESCO’s mission and with our guiding principle: #ForThePeople.
At a time when artificial intelligence is transforming our societies, His Holiness’s call to safeguard humanity, critical thinking and the search for truth echoes UNESCO’s work through our 2021 Recommendation on the Ethics of AI and our commitment to Media and Information Literacy.
UNESCO and the Holy See share a deep commitment to education, culture, science and ethics— to ensure that technology serves humanity and human rights, and that peace is built through dialogue, knowledge and human dignity.
