Once I heard @LandonTengwall discuss how players were exhausted from endless walkthroughs and that he had lost the trust of his team, that, combined with his record, big games, and weird tactical errors, like...

Going for two against Michigan in 2023 and Oregon in 2024... but not doing it vs Oregon in 2025 when he had the inferior team to steal it, or never giving Warren the ball inside the 5 vs Ohio State in 2024... the HB Draw and 4th and the red sea in 2018...

told me everything I needed to know. I saw the bad decisions, but Landon being close to the program and explaining on X to the Franklin defenders why what was done was needed gave really valuable insight. He (Franklin) was never sure of himself or his players, and given the history on offense, a total control freak. That's a bad combination. Until Franklin overcomes that, or transforms his perfection from being one of control to chasing a standard and expectation, he won't ever win those big games.

If Penn State is in a dark age in 10 years, I will still defend firing him. I don't care that Ohio State had superior talent. Michigan had the same talent disadvantage and overcame it, and really owned Ohio State in the decision-making department on the field during that 4-game stretch. In 2024 and 2025, Georgia had the same talent disadvantage on its starting roster against Texas and has OWNED them.

INDIANA beat Ryan Day before James Franklin. Lanning in 2024 had inferior players to Franklin in 2024, but he actually beat Day because of what is mentioned above... Lanning has balls of steel, believes in his players, has a concrete identity, and lets his coaches do their thing, for better or for worse. Mario Cristobal, with TWO inferior rosters, is 2-0 vs Day. Paul Chryst had identical results vs Ohio State with drastically inferior recruiting. Day is an elite coach, but no one, not even Saban, is invincible, especially when the talent gap isn't as wide as an ocean trench.

Being 10th in the team talent composite and playing No.3 composite Ohio State means you should beat them, sustainably, like 3 times in 10 seasons, maybe even four times when you factor in the ups and downs of roster construction and how big the Shoe and Beaver stadium are in terms of homefield advantage. You saw this nearly play out, where they held leads or were in the game in the 4th in 2022, 2023, and 2024. You put Harbaugh, Cignetti, or Kirby on those teams, and there is a good chance they'd be 2-1, and 3-0 in those games would be possible (they might even have more wins if you observe the 2017, 2018, and 2021 games)... instead, Penn State got saddled with 0-3 (and 0-6) in those matchups.

Franklin was flukishly bad against the top coaches and rosters, in a sustainable way (as in, he showed he will ALWAYS lose those games). That's unacceptable at a Top 10 program, let alone a Top 15 or Top 20 program historically. The "Franklin Effect" is one of complete emasculation when you face the top ten power-rated teams.
