One exciting development at the AFAF conference was the lively, active student presence. More about this later, but well done @HeatherFFS and @StudentAFAF- @_connieshaw@MaeveHalligan - If you are a student, sign up here and get involved.

#JesuisSamuel For 4 years universities and the teachers’ unions have been silent about the Islamist slaughter of Samuel Paty. Will they now say anything? Too shamefaced? @StudentAFAF@SpeechUnion@ProfDHayes

The UK is now ranked only in the third tier on a global index of freedom of expression due to the 'chilling effect' of government policies, policing and the intimidation of journalists. "How did we let this happen?", asks Labour MP Graham Stringer.

Thank you @soniasodha for this excellent piece.
"Academic freedom – the freedom of scholars to question existing orthodoxies and put forward new ideas – is fundamental to the pursuit of knowledge and is a building block of democracy."

Looks like this could be an entry on our Banned List. We will look into it. We are politically neutral and oppose all calls for censorship in academia. @StudentAFAF See our list here: https://t.co/oScrImqnY5
We have updated our list. We are always willing to receive any updates. But we repeat: An appearance on this list does not imply that we support any of the views expressed by the individuals or groups. @StudentAFAF

Compare and contrast.
I would like to think that the significant efforts of so many academics who have been pushing for universities to take seriously their obligations towards academic freedom *as well as* their Equality Act 2010 viz-a-viz belief discrimination have translated into these two entirely different institutional reactions and approaches.
