Some people leave behind
possessions. Others leave behind stories in the lives of people they helped. For many Zimbabweans who benefited from his philanthropy, Wicknell Chivayoโs name became associated with giving sometimes publicly and on a very large scale, but also through assistance that reached churches, patients, students, vendors, artists and sport.
His support for healthcare included ambulances intended for provincial hospitals and fuel to keep them operating. Reports also documented assistance to Johanne Masowe eChishanu, including vehicles and buses, while church leaders recalled him paying school fees for students and assisting people battling serious illnesses. Vendors in Marondera described receiving financial help that went towards rent, food and school fees.
His generosity also reached Zimbabwean sport. Highlanders received financial support and a team bus, while his assistance extended to other football teams and the Warriors, including a reported US$250,000 contribution towards the national team's 2025 AFCON campaign. Artists, religious institutions and other organisations were also among beneficiaries reported over the years.
That is where the impact of philanthropy becomes deeply human. Behind an ambulance is a patient who may reach hospital in time. Behind school fees is a child who remains in the classroom. Behind assistance to a struggling family is food on a table, rent paid or another month survived. Behind support for sport is a dream kept alive.
Following his death, President Emmerson Mnangagwa accorded Chivayo Provincial Hero Status. In his tribute, the President specifically pointed to philanthropy that had touched public service, religion, culture and sport, describing Chivayo as a man whose ambitions extended beyond his immediate family.
And perhaps that is what makes his passing so painful.
Money can be counted. Cars can be counted. Ambulances can be counted. Donations can be recorded. But how do we count the tears wiped away, the children whose education continued, the patients who received assistance, the churches strengthened, the sporting dreams supported, or the families who simply knew that someone had remembered them?
Today, the title Provincial Hero is part of the official recognition given to him. But for those whose lives were personally touched by his generosity, his legacy will be measured in memories far more intimate than any title.
Mukoma Wicknell, the journey ended far sooner than many imagined. Yet the hands you extended to others created stories that did not end with you.
You came, you worked, you gave, and you touched lives.
May those acts of kindness continue speaking where your voice can no longer speak. May your children one day hear not only about the businessman their father became, but also about the people who remember a moment when their father helped them when they needed someone.
Rest in peace, Mukoma Wicknell. ๐๏ธ๐ฟ๐ผ

We stand with all those affected by the devastating hailstorm in Masvingo. ๐๐พ๐ฟ๐ผ May families remain strong and safe as they rebuild, and may timely support reach every community in need.
Today as we #RememberKariba it is important to get facts right.
When a national disaster happens, the President cannot personally be physically present at every affected location. The test is whether the machinery of government is activated.
In Kariba, ministers and senior government officials were deployed to represent the state, coordinate the response and engage affected communities because the President was engaged with state duties in South Africa for the SADC summit. The First Lady also participated in efforts connected to affected families.
That distinction matters. The absence of the President from the physical site should not automatically be interpreted as the absence of government.
A functioning government is supposed to work through institutions, ministers, emergency agencies and local authorities.

Let us RememberKariba today. ๐ฟ๐ผ
Disaster response goes beyond the headlinesโfrom rescue and family support to recovery, safer infrastructure and prevention. The Justice Mafusire-led inquiry is key to learning lessons and building a safer future for Kariba.

Today, the Children of Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association (CZLWVA) gathers at the Harare International Conference Centre for a historic interface with His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa - himself a liberation war veteran and a distinguished son of Zimbabweโs struggle for independence.
The engagement brings together children and dependants of liberation war veterans, war collaborators, ex-political prisoners, detainees and restrictees to reflect on the liberation legacy, discuss their aspirations and strengthen their contribution to Zimbabweโs development.
Under the patronage of Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa Jnr, CZLWVA has been revitalised with a renewed focus on unity, inclusion, empowerment and ensuring that the sacrifices of Zimbabweโs liberation heroes continue to inspire future generations.
Todayโs interface provides members with a rare opportunity to engage directly with the President, share their experiences and hear his vision for their role in nation-building.
The liberation struggle secured Zimbabweโs freedom. Its enduring legacy must now inspire development, unity and prosperity for generations to come.
Song, dance and anticipation fill the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) as attendees gather ahead of President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwaโs address to the children of veterans of the liberation struggle.
