जब राणा प्रताप किशोर अवस्था में थे, तब एक बार राणा उदयसिंह ने उनको राजमहल में बुलाया और दो घोड़ों में से एक का चयन करने के लिए कहा। एक घोड़ा सफ़ेद था और दूसरा नीला। जैसे ही प्रताप ने कुछ कहा, उसके पहले ही उनके भाई शक्तिसिंह ने पिता से कहा कि उसे भी एक घोड़ा चाहिए।

प्रताप को नील अफ़ग़ानी घोड़ा पसंद था, लेकिन वे सफ़ेद घोड़े की ओर बढ़ते हैं और उसकी तारीफ़ करते जाते हैं। उन्हें सफ़ेद घोड़े की ओर बढ़ते हुए देख कर शक्तिसिंह तेज़ी से घोड़े की ओर जाकर उसकी सवारी कर लेते हैं।

उनकी यह शीघ्रता देखकर उदयसिंह वह सफ़ेद घोड़ा शक्तिसिंह को दे देते हैं और नील अफ़ग़ानी घोड़ा प्रताप को मिल जाता है। इसी नीले घोड़े का नाम 'चेतक' था, जो महाराणा प्रताप को बहुत प्रिय था।

इतिहासकारों के अनुसार महाराणा प्रताप के सबसे प्रिय और प्रसिद्ध नीलवर्ण अरबी मूल के घोड़े का नाम चेतक था। बाज नहीं, खगराज नहीं, पर आसमान में उड़ता था। इसीलिए उसका नाम पड़ा चेतक। इसके पैरों की टाप हाथी की सूंड तक पहुंचती थी और प्रताप ऊपर बैठे दुश्मन पर वार करते थे।

बताते हैं कि चेतक ने हल्दीघाटी के युद्ध में अपनी अद्भुत वीरता और बुद्धिमत्ता का परिचय दिया। वह घायल राणा प्रताप को दुश्मनों के बीच से सुरक्षित निकाल लाया था। इसी दौरान एक बरसाती नाला लांघते वक्त वह घायल हो गया और वीरगति को प्राप्त हुआ। इस नाले को अकबर की मुगल सेना पार नहीं कर सकी थी।

चेतक की स्वामिभक्ति पर बने कुछ लोकगीत मेवाड़ सहित बुंदेलखड़ में आज भी गाये जाते हैं। महाराणा प्रताप का जहां भी नाम आता है वहां चेतक को आज भी याद किया जाता है।

माना जाता है की चेतक बहुत ही समझदार और वीर घोड़ा था। हल्दीघाटी के युद्ध में मुगल सेना से अपने स्वामी महाराणा प्रताप की जान की रक्षा के लिए चेतक 25 फीट गहरे दरिया से कूद गया था।

हल्दीघाटी में बुरी तरह घायल होने पर महाराणा प्रताप को रणभूमि छोड़नी पड़ी थी और अंत में इसी युद्धस्थल के पास चेतक घायल हो कर उसकी मृत्यु हो गई। आज भी चेतक का मंदिर वहां बना हुआ है और चेतक की पराक्रम कथा वर्णित है।

उस समय चेतक की अपने मालिक के प्रति वफादारी किसी दूसरे राजपूत शासक से भी ज्यादा बढ़कर थी। अपने मालिक की अंतिम सांस तक वह उन्ही के साथ था और युद्धभूमि से भी वह अपने घायल महाराज को सुरक्षित रूप से वापस ले आया था। इस बात को देखते हुए हमें इस बात को वर्तमान में मान ही लेना चाहिए की भले ही इंसान वफादार हो या ना हो, जानवर हमेशा वफादार ही होते हैं।
