At @gsifthrive this week, Prof. @ganramkr brought some of the thinking that drives BharatGen to the room.

1/ Provenance is not a feature you add later. It is a design commitment from day one. In the data, in how you handle 22 scheduled languages and 700+ dialects, in keeping research and engineering honest with each other.

2/ We build ecosystem first. Models are a byproduct. The real output is shared infrastructure, partnerships, digital public goods. Project Tapestry with Yann LeCun's group, EPFL, MBZUAI and others is exactly that kind of bet.

India is that secular country where namaz in public places (or azaan blared through loudspeakers daily) is secular, but Durga Sooktam is communal!

My 2 cents: If a public airport prayer room has a board asking to maintain silence, people of all religions have to meditate silently. If not, doing Namaz loud or chanting Durga Sooktam (or some other Hindu prayer) loud should both be fair game.

A few more thoughts:

(1) As for “naama”, it can be chanted loud by one (or many together) or can be chanted silently within the mind too. Rupa too can correspond to a physical/external murthi or just an internal visualization of a form.

(2) While many mosques proudly play azaan on loudspeakers several times daily (in India), most Hindu temples use loudspeakers only for special festivals and then also they mainly play film songs rather than Vedic or Pouranik prayers. Priorities.. 😢

(3) While many Muslims proudly do namaz in public places, many Hindus are embarrassed to meditate or pray in public places. This is partly due to the emphasis on the inner world in sadhana, but also partly due to hangover from a millennium of oppression of Hindus in their own land, when they had to keep a low profile to remain alive!

(4) Another angle: Hindus are masters of discouraging others from sadhana! I have seen priests telling ladies chanting Sree Sooktam, Durga Sooktam etc that women cannot chant Veda mantras (not realizing that the rishi of Devi Sooktam was a lady, i.e. she first heard it within and revealed it to the world).

(5) Meditation to go inward and develop and loud bhajans etc with orhers, are both important and we cannot downplay either.

It is another example of our patient engineering approach at work. We have taken the time because we have to make it work in low end phones, low bandwidth networks (we test down to 8 kilobits/sec), offer outstanding privacy and security, and be very easy to use, all at the same time!

We are diligently updating the app weekly. We are working on a lot of the features you expect and in another month, a lot of that will be done. We are also investing in the infrastructure for scaling. I am personally talking to the engineers daily on all this.

We will launch a big marketing campaign once that is all in place. You will like the campaign!
