Bats increased in beaver areas compared to control: Species richness increased by one species per night ( 4→5 spp/night) with more red-listed species, activity increased 1.6×, feeding 2.3×. Beaver-caused standing deadwood is very important for the bats.

First paper of my PhD is out in the Journal of Animal Ecology🦫🦇! In Swiss streams, beaver-engineered ponds hosted more bats: Habitat structure (standing deadwood, canopy heterogeneity) + more prey explain the boost. https://t.co/KVNWeKMbM4

Our paper led by Thiago Gonçalves-Souza is out. Habitat fragmentation and habitat loss reduce biodiversity. @Nate_J_Sanders@Jon_Chase03
Results from 37 studies distributed worldwide, on plants and animals, comparing continuous and fragmented landscapes.

When the same data tells a different story…
You’d think analyzing the same dataset would lead to the same conclusions, but our NEW study shows otherwise. Different methods - different answers!
Why? It's complicated...

We recorded great declines in wintering Black headed gulls in Switzerland probably linked to avian flue - send me a message if you are interested to look at our data!

1. This summer I've been thinking a lot about "cognitive load" which is term that has multiple definitions but for me means something like "the amount of processing, analysing, thinking, & deciding I can do in a day before my brain stops working" here's a short thread about that

Trees live so long, and reproduce so slowly, that forests have no hope of adapting to the speed of climate change
I find it almost impossible to imagine how there could still be forests in a 3-degree world, and nothing scares me more

In den letzten 150 Jahren wurden in der Schweiz viele Fliessgewässer begradigt und verbaut. Das Video zeigt, warum dies für viele Lebewesen eine Einschränkung des Lebensraums bedeutete und wie es heute aussieht.
