I understand why Mr. Balding is confused -- I too have been surprised by the very dovish turn in Trump's economic policy toward China this year (all about purchases of beans, boeings and visits to ball rooms, nothing on currency or domestic consumption ... ). but it is what it is. Trump's new 301s are aimed at everyone not just China; his current term 2 tariffs are no different on China than on most other trading partners (USMCA partners are treated a bit better for now b/c of the USMCA exclusion). But we are where we are -- there is more concern about China's ever growing real trade surplus in Europe right now than in DC.
