IMF cuts Sri Lanka's medium-term Foreign Reserve projections
With recent Middle East tensions and their ripple effect on Sri Lanka, IMF has revised its projections for Gross International Reserves (GIR).
Contrary to what many experts and the media suggest, GIR is not a target. It's a projection made by @IMFNews. The actual target is not GIR, but NIR (Net International Reserves).
Summary of the GIR Projection Revisions
• Good: 2025 actual GIR was at USD 6,838 Mn, USD 288 Mn (+4%) above the projection
• Bad: 2026 GIR revised down by USD 239 Mn (-3%) to USD 8,645 Mn
• Ugly: 2027 GIR revised down by USD 1,592 Mn (-12%) to USD 11,779 Mn
Despite a higher 2025 starting base, 2026 is revised down and 2027 cut deeper still.
IMF sees reserves rising, but at a slower pace.
This is a stark reminder of how a single external shock can ripple through an economy for years to come.
If you are interested to know the story behind the cut in GIR, pls comment below. I will write a follow-up post, if there's significant interest.

@sonaljay8 Bro, SL cannot give even 5% of what Thailand offers for Indians.. Folks travel to TH for mostly Good time on beaches, great/cheap food incl hawkers, cheap Sex, Massages, easy transport, safety etc.., What SL can offer in a scale? tell me..
@sonaljay8 First SL has to stop subsidising fuel!
If not you're subsidising tourists to travel around the country at taxpayers expense.
Tourists need to be charged cost reflective prices, if not it's a net loss! 🤷
The United States Embassy in Colombo has rejected reports claiming that an FBI “team” arrived in Sri Lanka to assist investigations into alleged cyber theft involving Sri Lankan Treasury funds.
In a statement, the US Embassy said recent reporting had “incorrectly stated” that an FBI team had been deployed to Sri Lanka, clarifying that “no such deployment has occurred.”

Sri Lanka the devil’s island runs on dr*gs and corruption. Even if you ethically make it you will be named as a dr*g lord or cartel boss/major thief. The cost of being born in the devil’s island where money and power rule the people who are really just stuck forever as slaves
@sonaljay8@chamihin Down. Headed down UNLESS the economy improves dramatically. Which is unlikely with a bunch of cretins in charge. The postponed bulged-up Debt Repayments have to start in 2027. IMF program will end. Wholesale brutal capitalism will be needed to pay for decades of Socialism
Sri Lanka is the devil’s island, stuck in a loop of misery. The real potential was corruption and those who benefit, recovery is controlled decline. Poverty traps everywhere, just misery in the air. Not relevant enough to care, cursed to death by those who fled. Overall shithole.
Sri Lanka’s visa system has been down for weeks.
Weeks.
In the middle of peak tourism season.
Travelers stuck in limbo, and forums are flooded with confused tourists wondering if they can take their flight or now.
This isn’t a minor glitch. How is this not front page news? Where is the accountability?
Who is responsible for a system that collapses during the most critical revenue period of the year?
Every day this stays broken, we lose visitors. We lose revenue. We lose reputation.
This should have been fixed in 24 hours. Not weeks.
Heads should roll. Contracts should be reviewed. And someone should be answering for this publicly.
The silence is deafening. 🤦♂️
If Sri Lanka sustains it’s non corruption for the long term , talent from Philippines, Thailand and other corrupt countries can build from Lanka which happens to be in close proximity with India , which happens to have an FTA with the EU
Even when the west is failing… India , Saudi and China are going to prosper in the upcoming years. How is Sri Lanka positioning itself to benefit by being the go-to backbone for those economies? Thoughts?
Sri Lanka AND/OR INDIA needs to employ talent from the lower class of CORRUPT top 1% dominated countries like Philippines , Thai (+other lower income countries) and provide them with a corruption free country to spread their wings and fly. Idk just a random thought
@sonaljay8 Net negative is a saying in terms of real economics , not that it’s not generating money. But cuz it’s not a massive cash cow that will yield enough to get rid of massive debts
