Today, my Ukrainian colleague Ihor Brusylo @IgorBrusylo 🇺🇦 is presenting his credentials to the Director-General of the 🇺🇳UN‘s @FAO in Rome @FAODG. The EU 🇪🇺 and its Member States are working very closely with Ambassador Bruyslo and his team to address the serious consequences of Russia‘s continuing war of aggression against Ukraine on global food security at the UN in Rome. Ukraine’s agricultural exports are a vital source of food for countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Before the war, Ukraine‘s food exports fed 400 million people each year. The new series of Russian attacks on ports, grain storage facilities and civilian vessels in the Black Sea - and this at the height of the harvest season- is sending further shockwaves through global food markets and are contributing to a significant additional rise 📈 in global food prices. The European Union stands in unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and its people, supports all efforts to achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine and is asking @FAO to speedily step up its work to help securing the safe passage of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products through the Black Sea to feed the hungry in the world. 🇪🇺🇺🇦 @kajakallas@hadjalahbib@andrii_sybiha

Thank you @MartinSelmayr & @VeronicaV_EU ! It has been an honour to work with #TeamEurope to 🇻🇦 in support of our shared 🇪🇺 values & foreign policy priorities. As our @Ireland2026eu motto says - Ní neart go cur le chéile (‘Strength with unity’).
This week at #VillaEurope🇪🇺 in Rome, we said farewell🍀 to two great, committed and hard working members of our TeamEurope🇪🇺: Ireland’s Ambassador Frances Collins and her Deputy Erin Swan @IrlEmbHolySee🇨🇮, who are both ending their mandate at the Holy See🇻🇦 this summer. Frances and Erin have been strong partners for @VeronicaV_EU and me in making a united EU, based on common values, visible in Rome and to join us as strong defenders of principled multilateralism, international solidarity and the fight against climate change @LaudatoSiMvmt. Thanks a lot for the excellent co-operation, and in particular for gifting us with a print of Irish missionary Saint Colombanus - one of the “Fathers of Europe” - for the EU’s @eudeleg_rome in Rome.
An intense week has come to a conclusion at the 🇺🇳UN’s World Food Programme @WFP in Rome. Following a historic visit of Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex, who appealed to all of us to renew multilateralism as efficient instrument in the fight against hunger in the world, the Executive Board of @WFP - which this year is chaired by Brazil’s experienced Ambassador Carla Barroso Carneiro and includes 8 EU Member States as well as the 🇪🇺EU as observer - adopted Country Strategic Plans for Türkiye, Cuba, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia and Somalia. The EU worked for a broadest possible consensus behind these decisions to swiftly bring help to people in need. Multilateralism is hard work and requires compromises. Many thanks to all my great colleagues from TeamEurope for their commitment and unity this week! And to @WFP’s impressive management @CarlSkau and staff who all work tirelessly and under often extraordinary circumstances in order to save lives and change lives in the many crisis hotspots in the world.
The 🇪🇺EU and its Member States go with a strong sense of urgency and unity into this week‘s Annual Session of @WFP‘s Executive Board🇺🇳. Principled humanitarian action, helping those in need in the many crisis hotspots in the world and driving UN reform require a renewed willingness to find common solutions across regions. @WFP has great, highly conmitted staff and strong, experienced leadership @WFPChief. We owe it to them to show - on this 30th anniversary of the Executive Board of @WFP - that we are jointly capable of strengthening our multilateral cooperation in order to save lives and to change lives for the better.
Today, Pope Leo XIV @pontifex made a historic visit to the 🇺🇳UN World Food Programme @WFP headquarters in Rome. He insisted that food, water, and healthcare cannot be subordinated to geopolitical interests. He called for nations to work together with renewed multilateralism and solidarity with the most vulnerable in the world. Pope Leo XIV also paid tribute to the humanitarian workers who lost their lives while serving the @WFP in crisis hotspots. As Ambassador of the 🇪🇺European Union both to the UN in Rome and to the 🇻🇦HolySee, I was very glad to see that the Holy Father took the time to meet with @WFP’s impressive staff and to thank them personally for their important work in the interest of humanity.
I wish to appeal to the governments and peoples of the world to renew and strengthen their commitment, to increase the resources dedicated to combating hunger and its root causes, and to remove the obstacles that prevent aid from reaching those in need. At the same time, such support should also strengthen engagement with the Church and civil society. Reinforcing the capacities of all these actors together will multiply our collective effectiveness in the fight against hunger.
We are deeply honored to welcome His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to WFP Headquarters in Rome.
His message speaks to the heart of WFP’s mission and acts as a powerful reminder of why the fight against hunger matters. 💙
WFP is honored that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has accepted an invitation to visit the organization's Rome headquarters and address the global staff and its Executive Board on 22 June.
His visit will provide a unique opportunity to highlight the global fight against hunger. This is an issue which Pope Leo has often spoken out on, and WFP’s role as the leading humanitarian agency saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity.

Today, we had the privilege to host, at the meeting of the 🇪🇺EU Heads of Missions accredited to the 🇻🇦Holy See in Rome, H.E. Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, the Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Order of Malta @orderofmalta. The EU and 19 of our Member States have diplomatic relations with this historic subject of international law, which is at the same time a very important humanitarian actor and an Observer at the 🇺🇳United Nations @OrderofMaltaUN. We exchanged views on the humanitarian work of the @orderofmalta in Ukraine, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza and in Africa. In these challenging times where global needs are multiplying, it is crucial to team up with all those who work for a world of solidarity, of international law and of humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable. Thanks a lot, Grand Chancellor, for the very useful exchange!
Happy Republic Day, Italy! 🇮🇹
Today we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Italy’s historic referendum, by universal suffrage.
Buona Festa della Repubblica!
As Ambassador of the 🇪🇺European Union in Rome, I really appreciate that Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex mentions in his encyclica Magnifica Humanitas (released today) Beethoven‘s Ninth Symphony 🎼🇪🇺 as an example of authentic culture and art that preserves the spark of humanity - and which can never be replaced or reproduced by artificial intelligence.
Today, we celebrated #EuropeDay#GiornatadellEuropa at #VillaEuropa🇪🇺 in Rome, with the many diplomats from the diplomatic corps to the Holy See @TerzaLoggia🇻🇦, the Sovereign Order of Malta @orderofmalta, the UN🇺🇳 in Rome @FAO@WFP@IFAD and the Republic of San Marino @AffariEsteriSMR🇸🇲. We recalled the work of Robert Schuman who inspires us until today in our work for peace, transborder cooperation and solidarity between nations and continents. We underlined our unwavering solidarity with Ukraine @AndriiYurash@VKhymynets 🇪🇺🇺🇦. The state of the world is challenging. But the European Union and its friends continue to work for the rule of law, multilateralism, free and fair trade and an effective UN system. Thanks a lot to @IFADPresident Alvaro Lario🇪🇸, @WFP Executive Board President Carla Barroso Carneiro🇧🇷, @maumartina🇮🇹, @ICCROM_DG@ArunaGujral 🇮🇹, @AntonellaSberna🇮🇹 and @RaffaeleFitto🇮🇹 for having encouraged us today to believe in Europe, in the rules-based international system and in the work for global public goods, notably food security.
🇬🇧 Today in Rome, for Europe Day, I was a guest of the Delegation of the European Union to the Holy See, the Sovereign Order of Malta, the United Nations Organizations based in Rome, and the Republic of San Marino.
Nel pomeriggio di oggi si è svolto un colloquio telefonico tra il Santo Padre Leone XIV e S.E. il Signor António Costa, Presidente del Consiglio Europeo.
Great honour to speak with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. I congratulated @Pontifex on the upcoming first anniversary of his pontificate and expressed my appreciation of his commitment to promoting peace, justice and human rights worldwide. We talked about his recent apostolic journey to Africa. We also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the need to ensure peace and stability in the region.
The Ambassadors of the 🇪🇺European Union, of EU Member States and of 🇺🇦Ukraine @AndriiYurash met today in #VillaEuropa with @CaritasEuropa@mlcaritas and Caritas Ukraine which presented their important work in support of the Ukrainian population in the fifth years of Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war of aggression. The EU stands with Ukraine as long as it takes.
In a time of immense global volatility, war and conflict, the Ambassadors jointly share @Pontifex Leo XIV’s warning that “without respect for institutions and international agreements, humanity’s destiny risks being tragically compromised.” They commend the 🇻🇦Holy See’s diplomatic efforts @TerzaLoggia in support of comprehensive, just and lasting peace, of multilateralism and of international law. These efforts are very much needed.
