@kleeposting FWIW, DFW’s prose can feel contrived, like it’s an overt reaction to the kind of terse, paratactical style that became pervasive in American fiction. I’ve always considered Donna Tartt’s prose to be both maximalist and very refined. Out of context spoilers for The Secret History.
As a general rule it is better to be someone who is very interested in classical literature and philosophy than one who is very interested in classical history.
