IтАЩve been seeing videos of parents/teachers using fake ultrasound images to тАЬshowтАЭ children worms in their tummy after eating junk food, or pretending theyтАЩve lost their eyesight after looking at a phone. I don't like these.
See, I understand the intention is to change a child's behaviour. But I worry that we are using fear to teach them and telling them things that simply aren't true.
One day, children will discover that there were no worms in their tummy and that looking at a phone didn't make their teacher go blind. And when that happens, we donтАЩt just lose credibility on that one topic; we risk losing authenticity in everything else we say. And also when something has been unfairly forbidden, it may even become more intriguing.
At our preschool, even very young children are taught simple, truthful reasons.
We tell them that our tummy breaks food down and our body takes the useful nutrients from it. For eg., a carrot gives our body fibre, vitamins & other nutrients that help us grow. Candy and many highly processed foods may give us energy for a short time, but very little of what a growing body needs.
So we don't say that candy is bad or that candy will give you worms; we say, тАЬCandy doesn't give your body what it needs, so we may have it very rarely and only a little.тАЭ
You say this often enough, and it registers. The child begins to understand the why rather than simply being afraid of the food.
The same applies to screens. We explain that brains grow through playing, talking, reading, imagining, and exploring with all 5 senses, while bodies need movement to grow strong. Screens can take time away from these things, and too much screen use, especially near bedtime, can interfere with the sleep our brains and bodies need.
These facts aren't scary. They're simply true. We don't need to frighten children into healthy choices. We have to respect them enough to tell them the truth, and make the effort (even though it may be hard sometimes) to help them understand the why behind the choices we are asking them to make.
