Coding was never really about writing code. AI is just making that impossible to ignore.

You no longer need to recall syntax, boilerplate, or API endpoints. That was always the easy part, and AI is very good at it.

The hard part was never typing. It was thinking.

Compressing a messy real-world problem into a clean software layer. That's what developers actually love, and it's still on you.

We have been removing the typing part for decades. From assembly to high-level languages, to frameworks, to no-code.

AI is just the best abstraction to date.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine stopped contributing to a few open source projects he's been working on for decades.

He just stopped.

"I don't want to train my replacement for free," were his exact words.

I keep thinking about this.

I really don't know what will happen to open-source projects in the next few years, when it becomes painfully obvious that developers no longer care because they can just "build" whatever they need on the spot.

By the way, I don't think developers should be reinventing the wheel every time, and there's absolutely zero chance that leads to better software, but the reality is that many people don't care anymore.

Just a fair warning to founders: like Facebook and microsoft, I predict OpenAI will study their platform partners and compete with many of them in the coming years.

This isn't abnormal, mind you… Microsoft built windows, then destroyed their top partners lotus 1-2-3 and wordperfect with excel and word

Standup an open source llm or use pure platform plays who don't have to hit $200B in revenue to break-even in their 1.4t build outs

Every dollar you spend with openAI and every job you send to their API, might create the demise of your business
