@loudscotsbloke Does it have text mode? Also no. But it's so weird and cute! It's even stranger with the external keyboard connected. 9-year old me was duly impressed!
@tschak@OldTechAdverts@Google That just makes me want to set up a Usenet node! I haven't done that in decades. (but the amount of spam pushed me off it back then)
@mperedim @JimAndrakakis @hakmem Lots of people have said this (the period in years is often left out). If I recall correctly, there's a version of it in the Jargon File / Hacker's Dictionary, too.
@scaryfish People who laugh at kids who can't use rotary phones are often the same who ‘want to live without technology’. They're present-shocked, feeling irrelevant and this makes them feel like their skills with obsolete tech makes them better than kids and skills with today's.
@Jhykron@zoggins There were special applications (modem & printer control, synchronous comms, etc.) that needed the extra signals, but as devices became more intelligent and speeds higher, out-of-band signalling stopped being used much.
@loudscotsbloke My last several repairs have been like ‘It's old. Check capacitors first.’ [immediately finds shorted capacitors] ‘Well, what do you know, it works now!’
At this point, I think I need to sell my DSO and logic analyser and invest in a good in-circuit capacitor tester. 🤣
@DefenceForceOrg@and_coder Same for me, but Computability & Intractability was a theoretical course. I think it was assumed we'd learn about the practical applications in another course. (it's been a few decades, maybe we did have that explanation and I don't remember it)
@DefenceForceOrg@and_coder It's just a theoretical estimate for the algorithm. When the algorithm runs on actual hardware, knowing how your hardware works at a low level can seriously influence your choice of algorithm, especially on the more limited architectures we know and love.
@and_coder@inciprocal Two things to remember about O(·): it's a worst case description of complexity, so if you have special needs and/or special knowledge about your data this can influence the choice. And, the larger the n the more accurate the comparison.

@HereBeDragons3@robcfg Most micros were made on super-tight profit margins and were poorly thought out in terms of localisation. I think even the Oric Telestrat was QWERTY, and it was sold in France.
It was eye-opening when I saw the 16 bit Apricots and their localisation features.
