Where did I say that he wasn’t? I supported Keir Starmer’s premiership of the Labour Party, I was a member of party staff during the election year and a member of staff for 2024 intake Labour MPs afterwards. I had and continue to have huge respect for what he did for Labour and the country, but I will show Andy’s Labour Party that same respect and commitment; vocally supportive of the areas I agree with, a critical friend in areas that I do not. The Labour movement is and always should be about more than just a man at the top.
For me, ending homelessness is a moral mission.
I will take action to help get people off our streets, build more council and affordable housing and tackle bad landlords and rip-off rents.
More detail about my plan for housing and tackling homelessness - and my full manifesto - are available here: https://t.co/uN71ZLoCex
After years of determined campaigning by his mum and dad, backed by thousands, the Government has rightly announced an Inquiry into the death of Zane Gbangbola.
Zane was just seven when he died after floods in 2014
This Inquiry must be independent and deliver truth and justice.
Congratulations to Co-operative Party MP Andy Burnham on his election as Leader of the Labour Party.
For the first time ever, a Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament will become Prime Minister. 🌹🐝
@gaoblai The Co-operative party are active!
I'm a member myself & it's constantly campaigning & generating potential co-op policy on various matters!
@gaoblai@ShinMarginalScr There's no conspiracy here.
The cooperative party is funded mostly by membership fees and affiliation fees from multiple co-operative societies, businesses & trade unions (yes including the group that includes the co-op supermarket)
@GuyEmma68700@ADZanderWest Every child deserves a decent education, not just the children of the wealthy.
Private schools charging 5 figure tuition fees shouldn't get the privilege of VAT exemptions designed for charities, that's the change that this government made
The best time to join the Labour Party was yesterday, the 2nd best time is today. Be a part of the Labour movement that will improve lives & bring aspiration back to communities across the country! 🌹
Congratulations to @AndyBurnham. This change in leadership must be the start of a reset with public and the labour movement.
We need action to prove that we can deliver the change that people voted for, redistributing wealth and power into communities and standing firm on Labour values.
As Andy recognised in his speech, this is our final chance to seize the historic opportunity of a Labour government and defeat Reform ahead of the next election. We must not fail.
Best part of Andy Burnham's Labour Leader speech 👏
"Britain took a series of wrong turns in the 1980s"
"Political power was centralised and economic power was privatised"
"The country surrendered control of the essentials: housing, water, energy, transport, and left people exposed to higher costs"
"That in turn led to the concentration of more wealth and power in the hands of fewer people and fewer places"
"Large parts of Britain were deindustrialised without the power to set new ambitions for themselves"
"Proud British towns now a shadow of what they once were, and high streets in decline so common up and down the country"
"Over four decades political and economic power drained away out of our communities, in every region of the UK"
"If local places don't control something as basic as a bus service, how can they connect people to opportunity"
"If the sell off of council homes leaves the country chasing rents in the private sector through the benefits system and paying for temporary accommodation for thousands of families"
"How then will we find the money to invest in prevention and improve people's lives?"
"The truth is, we can't"
"And if we don't have sufficient public control over the cost of the essentials, how can we have control over inflation, public spending and the rest of the economy?"
"The right use the phrase, take back control"
"But they are the ones who gave it away in the first place"
@PolitlcsUK Whilst this may be considered in poor taste, I'd be curious to see what legislation & justification the police cite.
It doesn't seem like there's any attempt to incite violence here so I stuggle to see how this arrest would be in the public interet?
Private equity cuts corners in pursuit of profit, often leading to appalling conditions for already low-paid staff, while co-operatives give staff a say and a stake in the business and its success.
That's why we're calling for the end of profiteering in social care.
The UK is paying the price of dependency on global oil and gas markets, as Trump’s war in Iran and the crisis in Ukraine has proven in the last few years. We must uncouple electricity prices from gas and reap the rewards of our investment in cheap, clean power.
At a time when LGBT rights seem to be under threat across the world, Pride is more important than ever. A huge thanks to the Wokingham Pride team for inviting me to speak at Elms Field over the weekend.
@C_Small_@DavidLammy But then you are asking the state to financially punish your partner/fmr partner.
If you're really concerned, seek advise on getting a prenup before tying the knot
