A veteran is someone who wrote a blank check to America, payable up to and including their life. The least we can do is never forget them and their sacrifice.
I resigned from Bloomberg today. I spent the last three years turning routine market volatility into existential crises at both Bloomberg and Reuters. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to maximum-engagement doomerism and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

I resigned from Jefferies today. I spent the last three years doing credit underwriting and lending at Jefferies and Blue Owl. Neither is acting responsibly. They are racing to lose as much money as possible, gambling with pension money into a default wave. More thoughts below.
In my 37 years with the NYPD—20 of them as a chief—I found that there is no greater pain than the death of a police officer. Instantly, their families become royalty. The profoundly solemn honor we feel in their presence is difficult to communicate. We would do anything for them. The greatest gift they can give us is allowing us to remain in their lives. My friendships with these special families have been among the greatest gifts of my life.
After September 11, my family and I learned what it was like to receive that same kind of love and support. We will never forget the firefighters of Engine 214/Ladder 111—the “Nut House.” From our first visit to the firehouse days later, to their presence at the viewing and funeral, to bringing Michael home to us, they overwhelmed us with love and support.
For several years afterward, I had PBA cards made especially for them, with the name of their firehouse printed on the front where an officer’s shield number would normally appear. Each year, I gave one to every one of the 65 firefighters in that house. I would tell them, “As Chief of Brooklyn South, I have 13 precincts. You are my 14th command—and you always will be.”
While going through my “90-Year-Old Pile,” I was so happy to find this one. It reminded me of how special each of them was—and continues to be—to our family. Not that I needed a reminder.
Thank you all, and please stay safe.
The committee organizing the annual Juniper Valley Park 9/11 Memorial Vigil is looking for volunteers to help place 3,000 flags throughout the park.
They’ll be starting at 1:30 PM. Whatever time you can give is appreciated. Please come out and help our community remember.
While most people were enjoying Labor Day, Phil was out around the district cleaning catch basins and even brought tools from his own garage to cut back some overgrown green spaces.
Sometimes you just have to get out there and do it yourself.
Toward the end of her life, although she didn't know that, my late mother Millie, an RN, took a dream trip: a cruise along the Nile. She kept a diary. Today for the first time since she died I found the heart to read it. It was very detailed. About the people, not the temples:
It’s okay everyone! I’m okay!
Oh, my goodness there has been a bit of miscommunication. I’m not suffering from an illness; my doctor very recently prescribed a brand-new medication that turned out to have some nasty side effects. Due to the discomfort, my doctor ordered me to remain at home until it can be sorted out.
What awful timing for this to happen! My deepest appreciation to everyone for the concern.
This is just a speedbump! I expect to be out and about as soon as I’m given the go-ahead!
Again, my love and thanks to everyone for all the concern.
