Very pleased to see this article in print! In a study with 2000 subjects, we track how people read syntactically complex sentences, and find that word predictability estimated from language models does a poor job of explaining the human data. https://t.co/pbzFavnMqS
The project uses Burgoyne et al (2023)'s suite of "Squared" tasks measuring attn control (AC). https://t.co/JrVhrgytJX
The ⬜️ tasks are proposed to engage AC more heavily than classic Stroop, Flanker & Simon.

@SolomonKurz I've often seen this paper used to justify the practice: https://t.co/GhHzghvKhM . But when z/t-scoring is done within-person, the practice doesn't mesh well with mixed models because within-person z-scoring washes out b/w-person variance so random subject fx can't be estimated
