For the second time now, the evidence shows that there are multiple examples of invocation within the first two hundred years, along with clear precedents in Second Temple Judaism, early archaeological evidence, amulets, Origen, and yes, Origen does support the point in his commentary of the Song of Songs that Gavin never answered, and the second-century pseudonymous account of Paul’s martyrdom.

Gavin is a brilliant and well-read guy, but he is simply wrong about this historical claim. At this point, he needs to stop buckling down, revise his statement, and admit that he overstated the evidence. He can still reject the practice theologically, but he cannot continue claiming the historical evidence is not there.
