Mawlid al-Nabi Mubarak to Muslims in New York City and around the world.
Today, we honor the life and enduring legacy of Prophet Muhammad (May Peace Be Upon Him), whose teachings of compassion, generosity, justice, faith, and service have inspired communities for more than 1,400 years.
Here in New York City, his example reminds us that caring for one another, embracing our diversity, and serving our communities, makes us stronger as we work to build a better New York City for everyone.
Wishing joy, peace, and blessings upon all who celebrate.

Shaykh al-Akbar Ibn al-Arabi's (ق) Reason For Composing Poetry
The reason I began uttering poetry was that I saw an angel in a spiritual vision who brought me a piece of white light, as if it were a piece of sunlight. I asked: 'What is this?' and it was said to me: 'Surah al-Shu'ara (The Poets).' So I swallowed it, and I felt a hair rise from my chest to my throat and into my mouth, transforming into a living creature with a head, a tongue, two eyes, and two lips. It extended from my mouth until its head struck both horizons - the East and the West - and then it contracted and returned into my chest. Thus I knew that my words would reach the East and the West. I returned to my physical senses while uttering poetry without deliberate thought or reflection, and spiritual support (imdād) has continuously poured over me ever since.
It was because of this sublime spiritual vision that I recorded whatever came to my memory in this Diwan - and what escaped me was far greater. Everything within it, praise be to God, is purely a divine inspiration, a holy spiritual breathing, and an elevated inheritance and bestowal. Therefore, gratitude belongs to its Creator, not to its compiler; the weak servant is merely its recorder and scribe (...)
Should there occur in this poetry the mention of a group of gnostics or others by way of praise, commendation, love poetry (ghazal), or amatory prelude (tashbīb), the individual person mentioned is not what is intended. Rather, what is intended is that person's name as an indicator of one of the Divine Names veiled behind veils of lights - such as 'Abd al-'Aziz (Servant of the Mighty), which signifies the servant's state in the spiritual witnessing of Divine Might, and similar instances (...) Almighty God said: "So do not claim purity for yourselves; He knows best who fears Him" [Quran 53:32] (...) Thus, when I offer praise, I praise only the spiritual state and station (maqām) that transcend physical expression; for speaking of spiritual stations and what they bestow is the domain of verified gnostics, whereas speaking about mere people is not their concern.
Likewise, if there appears in this Diwan anything pertaining to love poetry (ghazal), amatory preludes (tashbīb), wine, gatherings of intimacy, women and their names, or youths, my intention is never what worldly poets intend through romantic verse directed at specific individuals. My sole intention is divine sciences and lordly mysteries. I have already clarified some of what I mentioned in a work of ours titled Al-Dhakha'ir wa al-A'laq (The Treasures and Precious Things), in which we explained our intentions behind the love poetry in our collection titled Tarjuman al-Ashwaq (The Interpreter of Desires) (...)
There is not in all my speech - whether prose or poetry - a single excess letter, word, or filler whatsoever. I do not intend a letter or a specific arrangement except for an underlying spiritual meaning. I view speech as belonging solely to God, Who does nothing in vain nor commands anything without wisdom. If others fail to understand this, I do not mind. Whenever I am asked about any of it, I explain it. I have been asked more than once, and our path offers nothing other than this. It is through this that the People of God surpass everyone who expresses reality; otherwise, how would they be distinguished from ordinary people? "And praise be to God, Who guided us to this, and we would not have been guided had God not guided us" [Quran 7:43].
Real Sufism would produce cleaner streets than Japan, because it would see the street as God's path, the stranger as God's face, and the act of cleaning as dhikr of the hands.
