Quick weekend away in Brixham and can't away from #rdguk history. A month later the Battle of Broad Street took place that sealed the fate of King James...
Alfred had a link to Reading as he was present at the 1st Battle of Reading in 871 against the Viking Great Heathen Army. He was on the losing side that day and only escaped with his life after fording the River Loddon #rdguk
The Alfred in question here is King Alfred (of burnt cakes fame), and his kingdom was that of Wessex, which covered the Reading and Berkshire area. David Hinton had this published in 1977 when he was working as a lecturer in archaeology, but it covers all sorts of aspects.
@readingmuseum@ReadingCouncil@ReadingCivicSoc Couldn't see it in the rubble so fingers crossed it's safe somewhere. It did have the wrong dates so maybe opportunity for a new one if it has gone
Noticed last night on a walk that the plaque on the old Reading Establishment marking Fox Talbot's work on photography has disappeared during the refurb work. Anyone know if this is going to be replaced #rdguk@ReadingCouncil@ReadingCivicSoc@readingmuseum
Head to the modern town of Reading and explore galleries of historic and artistic objects at @readingmuseum. https://t.co/6szsmy7Zz8
Discover archaeology from Roman Silchester, the famous Victorian copy of the Bayeux Tapestry, and donโt forget to explore the famous Abbey Ruins.
As it's #worldphotographyday2025 here's an image of the then newly built Royal Berkshire Hospital in #rdguk taken by William Henry Fox Talbot, the father of modern photography who worked at the nearby Reading Establishment in 1844 - 1847
#rdguk had one of these lock ups in the last arch of the now demolished (1860s) loggia that stood at the side of St Laurence's church. Can be seen in this Fox Talbot image from c.1844
Village lock-ups were once used to hold petty criminals before they were released or sent to trial. โ๏ธ
They can be found across England, and today the majority that survive date from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Have you ever spotted one of these buildings?
