Abdul Syed is asked point blank if he would cut aid to Israel.

Rather than answer directly, he says he only wants to cut "unconditional aid" in accordance with the "Leahy Laws."

The Leahy Laws are actually extremely weak. They would have little to no impact on funding Israel.

First of all, the Leahy Laws do not actually apply to countries. They apply to specific military units. If there is suspicion that a specific military unit in some country is involved in human rights violations, the law prohibits funding or other assistance.

So Israel as a country could not be denied aid via this law. Furthermore, the law only applies to the actions of military units, not government policy. The fact that Israeli policies violate international law does not trigger the Leahy Laws.

Furthermore, there are many remediation steps that the Leahy Laws specify that allow Israel uses to prevent a cut in funding of IDF units.

In summary, Abdul is taking a very weak stance on funding to Israel.

In fact, he has the same position as establishment democrats like Elizabeth Warren, who also call for conditioning aid to Israel.
