The Wayne County NY Public Defender's Office is dedicated to providing quality representation for those unable to afford counsel in criminal cases and appeals.
HESC/DALF can stave off the extreme attrition at DA's and PD's offices by helping with our crushing student debt. @CarlHeastie it's imperative to bring @JoAnneSimonBK52 bill: A1568B to a floor vote ASAP so we can keep doing this important work. #ExpandStudentLoanRelief
WCPD placed this editorial in the Rochester D+C last week urging NY legislators continue to protect discovery reform. Thank you for funding fairness. We can confirm it's working. @GovKathyHochul@AndreaSCousins @CarlHeastie
The budget is still not final and NYSACDL remains strongly opposed to the @GovKathyHochul's proposed rollbacks to bail laws.
These changes will send more Black and brown New Yorkers to deadly jails.
We ask the legislature to stand firm.
@NYSenDems@NYSA_Majority
Defender offices speak in a unified voice against any back door, last minute changes to discovery laws, slipped into the budget, no less. Yet the NYC DAs claim defense lawyers are "lying in wait" and playing games. Please. https://t.co/pi3p6GWw9D
Three NYC DAs have been pushing for discovery rollbacks behind closed doors for months. Why? Because fairness is apparently too hard to figure out. So they have worked in the dark to gut the law during the opaque budget process. This should be a hard NO.

CDANY Statement RE Rumored Gutting of NY's Discovery Laws
We are appalled but not surprised to learn that certain DAs have waged a covert campaign to effectively gut the historic successful discovery reforms passed in '19.

@NYSenate@NYSA_Majority
Not satisfied with merely changing the bail laws to jail more New Yorkers awaiting trial, the Governor is now attempting to use the budget process to roll back the discovery laws, making it harder for those same New Yorkers to see the evidence in their case.
CNN just said that a misdemeanor conviction in NY is just a fine. Hmm. WCPD has had thousands of jailed clients who would disagree strongly with that, and point out the permanent damage "just" a misdemeanor can cause, for life. Sloppy reporting. @CNN And let's pass #cleanslateny
Here @LegalAidNYC we renew our urgent call to @AndreaSCousins, @CarlHeastie & members of the Legislature to continue to reject @GovKathyHochul regressive rollbacks to New York’s successful bail reform law." https://t.co/dsnDWrDpAH
Defenders: @NYSenate & @NYSA_Majority Hold the Line on Bail Reform
CDANY Pres Mark Funk: @GovKathyHochul insists on rollbacks that would result in more low-income people deprived of liberty pretrial, despite clear & overwhelming data that #bailreform is working.
#NYSBudget
@TheRealLatriceW@chiefdefendsNY I know nobody in these responses cares about data. But here it is anyway. NY tried locking everybody up. It didn't work and was racist. Leave bail reform alone.
