Super excited to present the work of the past 3 years from our international collaboration with 80+ researchers from 17 countries today in @ScienceMagazine. Congrats to everyone on this achievement.

In the largest ever genetic analysis of grapevine varieties, researchers provide new insights into how, when, and where wine and table grapevines were domesticated, which has been a longstanding question.

Excited to report in @NaturePlants the characterization of an angiosperm-conserved gene (SMPED1) in a wild ginger species that controls synchronized maturation of sex organs (dichogamy). Great collaboration with Drs Qingjun Li, Spencer Barrett, and John Kress.

SMPED1, located in a dichogamy-determining region in Alpinia species, controls the timing of sex-organ synchrony.

Today is #BiodiversityDay2024! 🌍 Global agriculture centers have been the guardians of crop varietal diversity. Science helps in their conservation. Tools such as gene editing help create more diversity, adding value for crop improvement
@MadSealCutter Just to establish chronology, nothing more. The sentence seems truncated. (Some guy in what year) called Liang Nian to Yangzhou Office for a few months. Nian carved many seals for this guy. This episode should not come before this year.
1. Much human genetic variation is phenotypically meaningless. Why? Cooperative genes are locked in a forever war w/ selfish genes. The cooperative genes have won most battles but now our genomes are littered with the dead & decaying bodies of a million selfish genes. 🧵
We are delighted to share our work on a robust, accurate method for sampling genome-wide genealogies (aka ARGs) from the full posterior distribution. This is a product of years of hard work by @YunDeng5, who is jointly advised by @ras_nielsen and me. https://t.co/BIDUnV8OeL

Check out the 2nd SnapShot of the ribosome biogenesis series featuring the 60S ribosomal subunit! This was a great collaboration w Ed Hurt & Roland Beckmann. Read the SnapShot & watch the animation w narration here: https://t.co/qp5R4sLXyL
@MadSealCutter A nuanced difference between 弄/搞 and 做 is that the former has a connotation of 'mindless, disorderly, and not knowing where it's going/what I'm doing.' In some cases, they are not interchangeable. eg. 搞价=haggle (don't know if will succeed) vs. 做价=set a price.
Snake evolution:
1. Snake diversification associated with massive shifts in traits - saltation case. 2. Innovations occurred once and in quick succession. 3. Individual traits had minimal ability to explain speciation rate variation.
