Wow. It’s 2024 and I’ve just had to crawl along the floor of this LOT Polish airline to get to the toilet during a flight back from Warsaw as “we don’t have onboard wheelchairs. It’s airline policy”. If you’re disabled and you can’t walk this is just discriminatory.
After a tiring few days of conflicting info from UCAS and @durham_uni we now have a guarantee that Corinne will be offered a place and can submit the exact same application, and has until June 2025 to do so. After the initial awful email, we're content with this outcome. Thanks.
Corinne had another email from @durham_uni today repeating that she needs to reapply. And that, in addition, she needs to remind the Uni of her circumstances when she does so... Right in the middle of treatment, in a hospital, in a different part of the country. Mint.
Corinne dreams of studying sociology at Uni. She's recently diagnosed with cancer and is in hospital fighting. Corinne asked @DurhamSociology to defer her offer. They refused and told her to apply when she is in a "better position to do so". WTF!?
@durham_uni@carlenefirmin
@durham_uni I am wondering what the reason is behind your absolute disgraceful decision to do this? This young lady is without doubt the most hardworking, intelligent 17 year old I have had the pleasure of meeting and she is fighting for her
health! This is absolutely disgusting
Durham University can very easily just defer the place that was already offered to Corinne.
So why on earth say 'no'??!
I have no words, this is beyond disgraceful.
This brave girl shouldn't have to re-apply.
Shame on you @DurhamSociology@durham_uni
Are you sure you can’t do better @durham_uni@DurhamSociology ? I know normal procedure would be to defer a place after exam results but come on. Let’s HELP this diligent, courageous, intelligent teenager whilst undergoing cancer treatment??
@durham_uni@DurhamSociology what are you playing at?
Surely you can defer this place!
Corinne is a dedicated student with an amazingly bright future. She's facing her cancer diagnosis with such bravery. Can you be as brave as she is and #DoTheRightThing?
This is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE from @durham_uni@DurhamSociology zero compassion, zero empathy.
A teenager fighting cancer shouldn't have to fight for her future too!
I know Corinne, she is an absolute star and she deserves her bright future! Please share away, this is not okay!
This is outrageously ableist behaviour from @durham_uni they should be ashamed. Why on earth can’t they allow her to defer a year whilst she recovers? Please share
My daughter Corinne was recently diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. She is 17. Corinne would like to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust. If you are able to, we'd be grateful for your donation.
