We met with a PNW developer today about courtyard block designs that could easily create 40-60 units per acres, enough to sustain local businesses, strong school enrollment, and all sorts of public infrastructure.
courtyard urbanism rather uniquely balances the public realm with the private realm, strengthening both. By pushing the building mass tall and thin around the perimeter of the block, the design simultaneously frames the public streets and creates safe and quiet residential yard area.
The project explores architecture as an extension of the landscape, featuring a series of interlocking ring-shaped roofs that form a spatial continuum of gardens, courtyards, and walkways.
Designed for the Chengdu World Horticultural Exhibition 2024, the pavilion unfolds as a continuous spatial sequence of gardens and courtyards, where natural light and greenery flow across different levels. Its layered roofscape reflects the undulating geography of Sichuan, transforming the pavilion into a living, walkable terrain.

Designed in 2024 as a competition entry, the project integrates historical rehabilitation with contemporary design on a compact 700 m² site. Its vertical orientation and dynamic east-west axis enhance the skyline, while a façade of white fiber concrete and metal framework ensures durability and visual impact.
