Very grateful to HE Ammar al-Hakim for receiving me today during the national day of Sovereignty of Iraq, and for his support to the #ICRC. We exchanged on ICRC’s work in Iraq assisting returning families and people deprived of their freedom. @ICRC_IQ

استقبل سماحة السيد الحكيم، رئيس تحالف قوى الدولة الوطنية، في مكتبه ببغداد، السيد ويليام دي يونغ، رئيس اللجنة الدولية للصليب الأحمر في العراق، معرباً عن شكره لتهاني اللجنة بيوم السيادة وانتهاء مهام التحالف الدولي لمحاربة داعش في العراق.
وبيّن سماحته أن يوم السيادة دليل على تعافي العراق وانتهاء مرحلة الإرهاب، مثمّناً كل الجهود التي أسهمت في تخفيف معاناة الشعب العراقي من الإرهاب، ومنها معاناة النزوح وتدمير المدن، مؤكداً أن أولويات العراق في الوقت الحالي هي حفظ المنجز الأمني، وتفعيل العمل الاستخباري وإدامته، وحل مشكلة السلاح خارج إطار الدولة بالحوار والتفاهم. كما أبدى دعمه لعمل اللجنة الدولية في العراق وتذليل العقبات أمامها.

Speaking to families returning to their home villages after years displaced due to the conflict was a humbling experience. Their resilience and determination to rebuild their lives is so motivating for the #ICRC colleagues and myself. @ICRC_IQ

Honored to meet H.E. K. Shwani today, the Minister of Justice for Iraq. We discussed #ICRC's support to Iraq's considerable efforts in places of detention, in particular in protecting family links and how to improve conditions of detention and healthcare.

Today I had the honor of meeting H.E. Mohammed Husham Al Fityan, Chief of Protocol for the Iraq Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I presented my credentials and and briefly discussed #ICRC work in Iraq. I am grateful for the warm welcome to Iraq and look forward to our collaboration.

Families of the missing gathered in a symbolic bazaar organized by @ICRC to show resilience & solidarity. Amid pain & waiting, their smiles reflected hope & strength. Every table & handmade item carried a message: the missing are not forgotten, and families deserve answers.

"My son’s disappearance did not break us ... it gave us strength to move forward," says Abu Mahmoud, showing resilience amidst heartbreak. Families of the missing face not just psychological difficulties but economic, social, legal & administrative challenges.

Yesterday was the the International Day of the Disappeared, a day where we remember the victims of enforced disappearences and stand by their families. @ICRC_IQ has supported these families for many years, their strength and resilience was truly inspiring and humbling.

"Family members have to stand together & support one another," says Khadija from 📍Ninewa, Iraq, to encourage other families of the missing, despite the disappearance of her son Mustafa when he was just 12 years old.

Behind each of these numbers is a person with a name, a story, & a whole family waiting for their return, suffering the pain of disappearance & uncertainty.

The families of the missing have the right to ask about the fate of their loved ones & to receive answers.

The ICRC has begun operating its RED aircraft from Jeddah, just one hour from Port Sudan, strengthening our ability to move humanitarian teams quickly and respond to growing needs in Sudan.

We thank the authorities of Saudi Arabia and Sudan for facilitating this arrangement.
