I've taken time to play older games that I never had the means to play or just slipped under my radar and for the most part the jank vanishes from my mind once I just learn the games mechanics and meet it on its terms and I have fun, which makes remake culture more disheartening

Might be a hot take, but I don't think anything on the NES fully holds up. Mario 3, Mega Man 2 and the first Kirby are still standouts but all the NES classics have far superior follow ups on the SNES.
