Short dramas have quietly become a massive entertainment format.
Think next-gen soap operas: serialized, mobile-first, and monetized like games.
In China, they already generate more revenue than the domestic box office.
And now AI is going to blow this format wide open 👇
starting a consumer company is basically opting into pain as a lifestyle.
you need this weird, almost contradictory stack which is taste + timing, future intuition + present execution, & culture fluency + product rigor. most ppl have like… one of these. maybe two if they’re lucky.
oh the worst thing is that there’s no clean feedback loop. ain’t no tidy dashboards telling you you’re right. it’s mostly vibes, weak signals, & ridiculously delayed validation if it comes at all (kinda like being in a toxic situationship). you’re effectively betting on something that doesn’t fully exist yet, using instincts you can’t quite articulate, in a market that will happily ignore you until it suddenly doesn’t.
this is one of the most asymmetric games you can play but also one of the least coherent while you’re in it. i think of it as playing a video game in hall of fame difficulty with no tutorial & half the UI missing.
Still can’t believe nobody’s built a micro-anime studio yet
The logic is exactly the same as the mini-dramas on TikTok:
- 2-3 min vertical episodes
- daily drops
- each one ends on a hook
- built for the scroll (not a TV screen)
From a prediction (or a wish) in 2024 when I first noticed it, it now looks like a gap in the market waiting to be filled
And now that the stars are aligning on their own
1. Micro-drama is a proven format (ReelShort crossed $100M+ rev by serving eps with the format described above)
2. Anime is the only content genre with truly global and cross-cultural demand
3. AI video tools (Seedance 2.0, Kling or whatnot) are literally demolishing production timelines from months to days (given there’s adequate source material)
Nobody has combined all three yet
The micro-anime studio won’t look like a trad anime studio at all, more like a content engine
And I’m saying that with extremely deep respect in trad anime studios and culture and as a boomer
The IP is there
The audience is there
The tools are almost there
Who’s building this?

2026 is about to be the age of infinite anime.
Seedance 2.0 one-shots most of the execution.
The top shows will be able to create daily episodes soon.
Wild times ahead.
