University of Miami ad is about a girl who goes there and becomes a marine biologist, look I get that you’re marketing to kids but children need to learn that “marine biologists” are not real
@justincgohn@hjluks Same here. If anything, the sleep score, HRV, fitness levels and biometrics just cause stress. One injury or sickness away from 'bad' scores that induce anxiety. The irony is the people compulsively checking these scores are likely top 10% of general popn in terms of fitness.
We lost someone extraordinary
Ethan Neumann, a PhD candidate in my lab, worked tirelessly to study #fibrolamellar carcinoma, the cancer that would ultimately claim his life
On the day before he died he officially became Dr. Neumann:

"There’s a public health imperative to quickly expand the adoption of autonomous vehicles. More than 39,000 Americans died in motor vehicle crashes last year, more than homicide, plane crashes and natural disasters combined." Not surprisingly to a psychologist, properly instrumented self-driving cars have a fraction of the accident rate. https://t.co/p0s2axBiuH
@drugmonkeyblog True in my experience. Our 2nd attempt at the NIH was successful because we had much more data to support the application. You are competing against a lot of labs so easier to convince reviewers with good data/figures.
Prof. Hamilton Smith at J. Craig Venter Institute, a Nobel laureate for discovering type II restriction enzymes, passed away last night.
A huge loss in Science, but his legacy will be remembered.

What incredibly sad news. Daniel Naroditsky coached my son in chess. He was an incredibly talented player, a demanding but kind coach, and a good young man, with a life full with promise. I am so sad to hear of his passing. I pray for comfort for his family.
This discovery traces back to the spring of 2018, when I was a postdoc in @NikoGeldner ’s lab. After shifting Arabidopsis seedlings from solid to liquid culture, I observed that the root commensal bacterium CHA0 rapidly colonized Casparian strip–defective mutants.
@florian_krammer I am surprised they are applying this new rule to cap-exempt, non-profit H1Bs. I thought the abuse of the H1B system was mostly due to IT companies. Can post docs apply for O visas?
@Edel_PLopez TAIR have done an amazing job with database, annotations and curation. They need support. I’d much rather send them money than pay for certain journal subscriptions.
This is excellent news! It's great to see food companies embracing the environmental benefits of new plant breeding technologies. Well done @MarsGlobal
@szintri Can you check for SVs? I’m guessing cutting that many times in 1 cell would create rearrangements. I’d be curious on the seed set in next generation.
Franklin W. Stahl, a molecular biologist who helped create a methodology to confirm how DNA replicates so elegant that the research has been remembered for more than five decades as “the most beautiful experiment in biology,” has died at 95. https://t.co/66X5wmm8aK
