I want to explain why I hate tech/cyber companies that pitch their own solutions as “neutral advice”.
I don’t have a conventional computer science or cyber education. I have a law degree. I taught myself to program.
When I was just starting out, I read some guide that recommended a package. It turns out it was just a wrapper around a far more popular library, and the guide recommending it was from the company that made it.
I only discovered my mistake when I got a tech job and mentioned it. I thought everyone used this! But people then told me what it was and I was super embarrassed.
I’m sure if I read that guide today I’d immediately spot it as an ad. It probably has some solid advice mixed in. And with my experience, I could easily say “that’s fine I just ignore all the weird ad bits”.
But law student me wasn’t equipped with that skill. Law student me got tricked. And fuck that company for tricking me because they knew that’s what they were doing.
When I get mad at these companies, I’m getting mad on behalf of my former self, and on behalf of the people in that same position today.
So if you’re going to pitch your own solution, you better make it clear that’s what you’re doing and disclose in unambiguous terms any benefit you get from it.
Yeah, so basically it turns out Meta has been heavily lobbying online age verification laws. They've lobbied over $2,000,000,000 to politicians in form of grants and donations.

📣Official statement: the new EU chat controls proposal for mass scanning is the same old surveillance with new branding.
Whether you call it a backdoor, a front door, or “upload moderation” it undermines encryption & creates significant vulnerabilities

Using a newsletter as an example, which is very popular on X, instead of sharing your personal email address with a newsletter found on X, you can quickly create an email address ([email protected]) in the app and use it to sign up.
This will reduce the possibility of receiving spam in the future.
Only friends signed up to the waiting list I created for https://t.co/tDYcF8Jjwk. But without any work on marketing, that's not surprising. Still not what I had hoped for.
So first things first, the waitlist has been removed. Now it's time to face reality and spend a lot more time on marketing. Where to start? 🫠
Trying out Logi's ERGO keyboard and mouse. First impression: the new keyboard really takes some getting used to, but it feels better right away.
I'll review them and share my thoughts in a blog post in 1-2 months.
Retweets massively appreciated.
Today, I'm excited to announce the waitlist for my first ever course, The Ultimate Guide to Debugging in Go.
Debugging is probably the most important skills that you never get taught. It is usually the first thing I teach folks and it's often quoted as the most useful thing they learnt from me.
I'm still working hard to get the course finished, but if you want to get access before anyone else and a tasty discount code, you can join the waitlist here:
