Wildlife comes in all shapes, sizes and…gymnastic abilities. 🤸‍♂️

For National Wildlife Day, we're highlighting this rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa) from the Pacific Northwest.

Rough-skinned newts are known for their bright orange bellies and their ability to produce a powerful toxin that helps protect them from predators. They also have some unusual behaviors, including this defensive posture known as an “unkenreflex.”

We're not sure what this move is called in the gymnastics world, but we're impressed!

From amphibians to mammals, wildlife has evolved a wide range of adaptations and behaviors that help animals survive in their environments. USGS science is used by managers, policy makers, and others for decisions that conserve and enhance healthy fish and wildlife populations across the U.S.

This is a false choice.

India does not have to choose between the full Vande Mataram and its plural, secular ethos.

A confident, plural India can honour its National Song in its entirety without asking anyone to surrender their faith, identity or constitutional rights.

And let us be clear: a decision taken by a political party in 1937 cannot supersede the constitutional position of the Republic in 1950 or the legal framework of the Republic today. The Constituent Assembly accorded Vande Mataram equal status with Jana Gana Mana as the National Song.

Nor was the Congress position of 1937 some unanimous, immutable judgment of the entire freedom movement. There was disagreement even within its own leadership. C. Rajagopalachari, for instance, argued in 1939 that the concession over Vande Mataram would not resolve the underlying problem.

So invoking a decades-old Congress resolution as though it were a constitutional command is misplaced.

The 2026 amendment does not tell anyone what to believe. It protects the National Song against deliberate prevention or disruption, just as the National Anthem enjoys such protection.

Insisting on the full National Song is not communalisation. It is refusing to perpetuate a selective truncation of a song that is part of India’s national inheritance.

Secularism cannot mean treating every expression of India’s civilisational heritage as a threat to minorities. Pluralism is not the art of deleting what makes us uncomfortable.

It is the confidence to let India’s many traditions coexist and to honour Vande Mataram in full, without apology or qualification.

Vande Mataram is not the negation of India’s pluralism. It is part of India’s national inheritance.
