The axolotl is named after Xólotl, the mysterious twin of Quetzalcóatl, a Teotl associated with transformation and the hidden world. In this small painting I imagined an axolotl adorned with His regalia, carrying the twisted wind jewel and jade ornaments of the Lord whose name it bears.

For the Nahuas, Xólotl was a guide, a shapeshifter, and the companion of the Sun on its nightly journey through the Underworld. The humble axolotl thus became one of His earthly forms, a creature suspended between worlds. ([Wikipedia][1])
