It’s absurd how largely left-leaning media are trying to rebrand Ali Larijani as a “moderate.” The Larijani family has never ever been seen as moderate by the Iranian people. From censorship at the Ministry of Culture to forced confessions on state TV, his record is deeply repressive. As #Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, he showed neither innovation nor achievement that would justify such a label.

More recently, he broke diplomatic norms by issuing a physical threat against Rafael Grossi here on X after the 12-day war with Israel, and even echoed threats against Trump—something his brother (Mohammad Javad) had previously done on Iranian state TV. His support for Hezbollah in Lebanon has also been tied to destabilizing the country’s internal security. Another Larijani family member (Sadiq), as head of the judiciary, oversaw a disastrous period marked by a surge in executions and financial corruption.

But the peak of Ali Larijani’s brutality dates back to January this year, when tens of thousands were slaughtered in the streets of Iran while he served as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council—the very body responsible for ordering the crackdown.
